just thinking...
I like the depth of the sketch.
Hopefully I will see more:wavey:

Well, now is time for da teeth. I'm trying to make them look weather-worn, or meteor-worn.

woohoo!! (the n00b cries...)
made a new material!
see, this is what happens when you scan an old smashed up 1942 weather-worn-and-grandpa -used-it-in-the-war=scratched-up dime
and use it as a bump-map.

That second material looks a lot better than the first pass. Is there a way that you could add a gradient material over it and add some darker stained area at the base of it? Almost like some water damage or dirt.....might help the aged feel a bit. Can't wait to see them embedded in the side of that cliff.

Nice and simple idea. The shadows look a little too complex. Maybe turn effect shadows off for some of the lights.
Good luck

Great idea, Matt. A gradient - stain will tell a better story. I'll hit that tonight. Appreciate the suggestion, Riki, but those shadows are part of a light dome I use for 'fakiosity' in rehearsing my materials.
Thanks for the look-sees~!

Big thanks to Matt of Mirage Graphics who suggested a gradient. This was a great hunt to try & tweak get something to look "stained" or weather-worn". Still trying..
Thanks, man!

just a few teeth 4 now. holes & volumetric lighting shall be the most tedious. But at least I have a basic look for now...

volumetrics are the next try. anistropic extended parameters (ADDITIVE and/or SUBTRACTIVE) are real helpers in tweaking realism in lights for me. WHY DON'T THESE LIGHTS DO WHAT I TELL 'EM!?! ;()

i think you should make the image more portrait like your original sketch. Not adding image to top and bottom, only to the top. Then you could have more detail on the forground spikes hanging over your head.
Also... what if the ground is like... shallow water. Maybe chuck some bubbles in floating around. And a few different colours swirling through the liquid. Just a thought.

to get a noticeable sky texture, IMHO it has to contrast with the foreground's main colour. Like green vs. red or blue vs. yellow. purple & beige worked out ok for this piece so far. i used a phased turbulent gradient ramp with alotta noise for this sky.
