View Full Version : Collab Poster
TheFreak 10-22-2003, 04:40 PM Hi Folks,
Just thought of an idea that I think sprung up from another idea someone else said a long time ago.
How about making a collaborative poster, I know this might sound a little odd but tell me what you think.
I remember years ago when I was a kid that I had a poster or two that comprised of an event or scene and within that scene there was LOADS of things going on. It was a cartoon poster and the most I remember was an Olympic scene and lots a stupid silly wee sports etc. going on. I'm not sure if this was just a UK/Ireland thing because it kinda resembled the novelty postcards etc that we have over here as well.
Anyway, the idea came to me that it might be a nice idea to create something like this for the CGTalk community. Most people in here are known by a trademark character or they have a model of themselves and well why not use them in a larger scene with loads of other people's models.
Not sure what kind of scene would be good yet, perhaps something in space or an office scene.....anything really. The point I was thinking is that each person would be doing something in the image, preferably something stupid...perhaps a few people could join together to do group stupidity.
Hope that all makes sense.....
Anyway when it's complete we could perhaps put it on one of the cafepress type sites and get big posters of the work. Perhaps even make a few pound if it sells :)
What ya think?
Or am I just talking poo :D

Hehe Hi unLevel
First in as usual :) Glad to see you approve, didn't know if anyone would even understand what i was talking about.
I wish i could get an image of the old poster i had, or something similar. Maybe someone else had a similar poster as a kid and they might be able to share :D

have you heard of those pixel buildings?
Where like each person gets to design their own level, then put them all together for a giant skyscraper...
I kinda see that as similar to what you want to do, right?
Love the idea, not sure how in the world we're going to do it, but it's a great idea...
Not sure what kind of poster you're talking about, I'll see what I can't dig up...

Yea i know the buildings you are talking about
I suppose it is like that, in that each person is represented in their own way. But it would look a litte more chaotic than that. Imagine taking a picture of a large crowd or people having a party, everybody doing something, either by themselves or with a group. It's the kind of picture you would look at 50 times and keep noticing something new everytime, something that you missed before. It would just be a bit of fun, it would be kind of be like a poster of a virtual party for the CGTalk folk :)
I'm not sure if it really could be done, perhaps to many conflicting styles would make it look like crap but i just thought it might be fun :D
If not then I have another idea that might work better. But i'll leave this one as it is at the moment and see if anyone else bites.

this sounds like a fun idea...
if only i had the time to help. im stuffed to the gills with jobs
one thing to think about is how to keep the posters content stylistically the same. this would be possible with 3d stuff (though the use of templates and one platform for the final render) but with the old 2d habits it could get very messy if everyone did there own thing.
this could make for a nice mini cg challenge with the poster used to promote the collaborative aspect of the forum?
cant help it .. i'm an old ad man
cheers

I think even with 3D it would still be hard to keep it stylistically the same. There would be a lot of different character styles on the one page and it could cause problems.
This kind of leads me onto the second part of my idea i mentioned earlier. Although this might limit the creativity process of the project. But i think you hit the nail on the head with the Templates idea.
Perhaps if we created a backdrop for the scene, as i said this could be a anything, a space port, an office, a bar etc. And also provided a basic character model with a basic body shape a head with no real facial features a genderless body and basic hands and feet and also with a basic Rig to allow movement.
Then supply this as a template and people could add clothes and props to the character and scene and create a small activity somewhere in the scene. e.g. a bar scene and the character is throwing a pint over someone (ok bad example but you get the idea)
Then (depending on the numbers of people involved) we choose/vote for the best/funniest/amazing scene activities and when we have enough to fill the scene we compile it into a final chaotic poster of fun :)
Every one has a chance and it's all in the name of learning and fun. And if it takes off we could do a few of them so no one feels left out.
How does that sound? It might solve a few issues such as stylistic issues and if we export the template in a generic format then everyone can participate.
Prolly still need Texture artists and such to build the initial scene as well.
Anyway does that sound better? any other ideas for this cause i think it would be a fun idea and maybe (if it was good enough) it could go into something like éxpose sort of an image for the community by the community abou the community.
My posts are getting longer and longer........

this all sounds good to me
providing the template would also open the game up for the novices (me included!) out there.
might be worth prodding a mod! see if there's any backing for your plan.
they will most likely say come back with the template and the poster scene idea.
but what the hay

I'm a novice myself so i would hope it would be catered for the noobs among us :)
Well maybe before i go looking for Mod attention for it we could rattle round afew ideas on the scene.
If i get a chance i'll see if i can make a generic body template for the character, it will be pretty basic but i think that is best at the moment.
So any ideas on the scene? perhaps a big party would be the easiest to work with.....or maybe in the scene of things we could to a fun poster of madness at the 3D Festival, you never know, if we were finished in time it might be nice to show off there :D although i don't know exactly what each character would get up to there?! Never been to one to know what goes on :hmm:

OK i had a mess around and came up with this, i think he is pretty generic and basic. Like i say i'm still a noob too so this guy might be really badly modeled but you can have a look.
We could then just add hats and clothes etc to him and then pose him accordingly for the picture? What ya think?

ok...small question...if we're all using the same model, wouldn't we all kinda look the same? I'm a newb to everything, so I might just be talking crazy-talk...:p

Well i would hope they wouldn't all look the same, people could personalise the template with clothes and probably some modifications. The template would just help to keep everything within some type of style guide.
I don't want to stop people having fun with it if they decide to complete a model, so they have a lot of scope with the model but hopefully the template would help them as a guide.
or maybe not
