View Full Version : Render to Texture and photometric lights
Traker 10-22-2003, 10:46 AM Did anyone managed to use "render to texture" with photometric lights?
I have in my scene 4 photometric lights with IES parameters...when i try to render the lightingmap the texture resulted is black...no light or shadows casted on objects...
Anyone succeded in solving this?

try changing the uvw channel to 1 in the render to texture dialog box??

Automatic unwrap is ON so this is not a mapping coordinates problems..i can use whatever mapping channell...

Exposure control is essential for photometric lighting solutions output. Make sure that is set correctly first maybe.
Can think of other things that it could be, I had lots of problems with render to texture at first with light tracing...
If the above doesn't sort the problem, I'll write a long post, but I think that could be it!

the only photometric light that will show up without a radiosity solution (normal scanline without advanced lighting) is the spot light, or point light, the strip and area light need a caculated radiosity solution to work.

I am using WEB parameters as i downloaded IES settings from lights manufacturers that acurately simulate real lights like street lights,etc...i`m using logarithmic exposure.

are you using advanced lighting? i.e radiosity. because only the point or spot light will be visible, the linear and area light only become visible if you calculate global illumination because they are area based, unlike the spot where light originates from a point.
if you are using a spot then make sure everything is to scale, because if you put a ies for a small spot and your scene is massivily out of scale then you wont see it.

My scene is at the right scale...When i simply render the scene everythings looks great..i can see the objects being iluminated by the photometric lights.
The problem is that when i try to "RENDER TO TEXTURE" the LIGHTINGMAP the bitmap is black...like there are no lights in the scene...
Why does the photometric light work in normal render but not in RENDER TO TEXTURE?
Note:UVmapping coordinates are in place(automatic unwraping is ON).Also i have tested the scene with normal light so there are no problems regarding render to texture settings.

im using 5.1 and dont have any troubles with ies showing up. could be a dodgy ies file? i think max 5.0 had problems with render to texture.

ive also had problems when, even though there is a radiosity solution, the render to texture goes black. If you calculate the radiosity at frame 0 then make sure you texture bake from that frame, otherwise it doesnt work.
im clutching at straws.

I`m not using radiosity...i use Light Tracer

ok...with some testing. the long and the short of it is.....light tracer and render to texture works well with anything other than web defined (ies light).
must be that it doesnt like the ies data.
ies data is only really used with radiosity, as light tracer is not accurate.
sorry i couldnt be of more help, looks like you might have to put standard lights in.

Thanks for trying...what realy makes me mad is that it works with normal render...i mean was it realy that hard to make it work with render to texture also...i bet they will make that posible in max somewhere in max 7:(
