View Full Version : Dominance War V - 2D - lepilo - God of liquid

03-22-2011, 08:15 PM
Hello to everybody!
My concept is of a Water God. He is still nameless though.
He controls all fluids: from water (as one of nature's elements) and vital bodily fluids to every kind of chemical liquid.
He is a bit insane music director, but instead of an orchestra, he directs fluids using his two batons, one in each hand.
He is in power of every living creature by controlling its bodily fluids. Everything mechanical he destroys with yellow acidic bombs. As a whole he is an omnipotent creature, capable of annihilating anything standing on its way.

Ooo reminds me of Scissors hand! Maybe you should check his costume out.

Little update..add some glowing fish like acid bombs, I'm not sure I'll keep them though...

I love the design, but I think at the moment he looks a bit more like a God of Trickery or something. He looks very playful. I love his jacket lol.

03-25-2011, 08:07 AM
Would expect a bit more fluid movement in the picture and more of a dynamic pose, since the subject is the god of liquid and he's basicly solid and quite stiff compared to water?

Perhaps change his hair to something more fluid or liquid?
Or his legs feel a little stiff to me, but that might just be me.

Guess it also depends on what you're planning with the props and background, if you play with that nicely it can add a lot of dynamic to the image I think.
Keep it up, I must say your god doesn't seem very godlike to me.. but he surely stands out from most of the concepts so far. Interested to see where this will lead to.
(Do keep the mandatory logo and / or colour scheme in mind, guessing you will use the logo as red as one of the main colours in the picture seems to be no option for you.)

Edit: Ah, I missed the badge, good. Nice play of colour btw Maestro.

03-25-2011, 10:36 AM
I like a lot the concept of water walking.
Keep on working.

Feronius (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=436133) - Thanks for the comment, you are right, i have some ideas to how to turn things around. The badge is not that visible indeed, so I'll thing of something.
davidramonilustracion (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=376659) - Thank you
Digiegg (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=14686) - He's more of metal type, I want to achieve more of a punk style guy.. : )

Thank you ersinerturk (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=189653) ! I was going for more grim imageof him, but I'll think about it, thanks for the feedback

04-04-2011, 01:30 AM
The idea of someone controling liquids isn't new, but controling them like a music director? Awesome :)
I like the last update, although I admit that he could be more fluid or have more fluid elements around him to have contrast, either a straight body and dynamics around him or the other way, but it's already going into the right direction (especially with his hair)

04-04-2011, 02:53 PM
Zykras (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=447122) - Well I'm trying to achieve the more of a fluid look around him...Glad you like it !

04-04-2011, 03:33 PM
It's an original idea, I like it. I think you need to make it more obvious he's controlling the water, maybe make a huge water splash mimicking the position of his hands. I have in mind something Stahlberg once painted, depicting a stream of water suspended in mid-air (http://features.cgsociety.org/galleryimages/566/Stahlberg_magic_submedium.jpg)

04-05-2011, 06:47 AM
Thanks for the suggestion BaronImpossible (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=131731)! I'll try to make it work.

I've decided to add a gun, that may not be the final design of it but still, it will be very halpful if you tell me what you think.
I forgot to mention the gun will be charged with the yellow acid stuff, and it will spray the acid at close range.

Lot of work with the belt, isn't it? I think it looks very good, I like a lot the gun, it's really original. Also acid bullets on the left makes the gun more visible, I think it's a good solution.
Keep on working.

04-18-2011, 03:41 PM
Thank you davidramonilustracion (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=376659). Nice progress. Like the color palette and atmosphere in your image. Maybe his right foot looks a bit strange. Here is a reference for the feet, I hope you donīt mind :)

Maybe you need to add a glow fx over the baton for a better read, and maybe more fog over the background and more rim light to the character for popup and better contrast against the background. Only a comment. Really cool and original concept , I liked a lot. Cheers!!

Hi lepilo;

My only comment is distorted perspective of buildings. Im not sure but i think they shouldnt be distorted that much. And just an idea maybe u can add some stuff under the water, here and there. can be buildings fishes i dont know. Looking good so far ^^

I agree with akiman, some sunk buildings would look very good.
The fact is that you've choosen a difficult background, but you can get a great result with it.
Go ahead.

I tried to balance the background... there were a lot of details, decided to get rid of them.. They were pulling away from the char. Balancing an image is the hardest thing for me..everything seems interesting to me I can render a detail in the background all my life..

Looking nice so far. The background without a bit of detail help to focus the attention in the caharacter. Maybe you can take out the building behind his right hand and baton (or put a lot of yellwo fog over it) to brake the tangent of the baton and building. Only a comment. :)

05-03-2011, 02:35 PM
Thank you Ferx (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=283330) ! I'll try to make the baton pop up.

05-04-2011, 11:49 AM
lepilo well done with the rendering man. Here's my honest crits:

Liking the concept of the chaotic background, does look like the work of a god, good job. If the foreground compliment the same mood, it would make the overall feel more chaotic. It's too calm at the foreground. Perhaps more ripples and waves?

Bout the character, when I saw the suit and the pose, I was expecting some playful dude, like Jack Sparrow or Ace Adventura kinda character. Which I think was cool! Liking the characteristic, we don't get to see that a lot. Though I'm not certain what type of god you are going for, but for me, judging by the playful design, I'd say they facial expression can really help boost up his inner self.

I'm looking forward to a whole new energy of your painting lepilo. Keep it up.

05-04-2011, 08:56 PM
Thank you for the kind words Randize (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=242549) !
About the char, I was looking for that mad hater look at the begging, lately I've been trying to make it more of a "knows what he is doing character", I'll try to make it clear in the concept sheet.
About the foreground, I'll work on it for sure.
Thanks again for coming by and taking the time to leave a comment.

Well, the background isn't bad in my eyes.. but I'm only a student so I'm not all that experienced and proffesional though. So take my feedback as that of an amateur.

But perhaps you should have a second look at the foreground / middle ground instead?
The bottom of the image just seem way too calm and dull compared to the playful background, perhaps make the water wilder or simply put somekind of slightly blurred wave in the foreground, as if it rolls by with force a bit in front of the character?
Maybe some floating pieces of rubbles from already destroyed buildings or other objects you would find in an urban setting?

Just some suggestions, I'm far from a star in compositioning.
Gives me the impression the bottom of the image is lacking something though. I do like how it's a lot calmer than the background, can't put my finger on it really.. but compared to what's going on in the background it's perhaps too calm or void of detail.

05-12-2011, 04:44 PM
Good work. Nice model sheet, I lke it :D The head and face of your god is really nice , well rendered ( maybe a bit more work in the ears :) ). Waiting for more updates. Cheers!!

Hey Feronius (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=436133),
thanks for the comment !I did some changes on the middle ground, you were right. About the floating ruble, I've tried that but it pulls too much attention from the char and I really wanted to do a focused image, nothing to distract you.
Thanks again for taking the time to leave a comment, I appreciate it!

Hey Ferx (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=283330),
thank you, I'm really glad you like it! About the ears, they should be simple, but I'll try to polish them up.Thanks for coming by !

wow!that is great!so reallistic!Strip on the clothe will make it even harder to paint.

why there are no near splash around your character?by add some,I think will make it even more powerfull.

05-15-2011, 11:00 AM
:D finally
I'm grateful for the interest and compliments, it really means a lot to me!!!
about the water, the idea was that he's kinda walkin' on water so there shouldn't be any splashes, if he's not actually touching the water. But you are not the only one that suggested to put some splash in the front so maybe I should do it :D

05-15-2011, 01:17 PM
Mira, I'm with the collective here - awesome image and a really well painted character and background, but the mid ground is losing the connection between what's going on in the foreground and what's happening out back. I totally see your reason for making it calm around him and I agree with that, but without a connection between front and back it doesn't really feel as though he's responsible for everything that's going on in the background. I think Feronius nailed it, a big wave or just turbulent water, perhaps even something lurking underneath that suggests more of his powers that is just making the mid-water rise like it does with a submarine? Looking again I think a little ripple that starts from him and and gets larger as it snakes back in an S-shape towards the right splash? Wouldn't have to be too big.

It's so good at present, it would be a shame not to give something a go! Please? For all of us who know you can do it?!

Mira, I love the way you paint those waves, I've never tried but will definitely be using your paintings as my first call for reference! I like this wave a lot and I'm with derricksong on this one, even more turbulence on the top of the wave. I think one or two more smaller waves closer to him will help even more. A ripple of water close to him, a small wave behind that, your mid-wave with more turbulence and then - BANG! All that havoc in the background. That would be awesome! Sorry if I'm making your life hell. If it helps, I'm having similar nightmares trying to get all the cool ideas in that everyone has been suggesting for me! We can do this, we CAN do this...

Also thanks for the support and kind words. Turns out a few nice comments work as a great engine for me you guy really helped me push through :D
I have a surgery scheduled for tomorrow so i won't be able to replay for several days.v_v
