View Full Version : First post! ^_^ Look at Banofi the monkey!
Hi everyone! This is my first post on CGtalk, but I hope to be around here a lot from now on. I'm teaching myself to use MAX. I recently finished one of my first 3D pieces, a monkey named "Banofi" designed on one of my own characters. Please let me know what you think!

Yeah , great !
Do you know the plug-in Swiffworks and Inkworks ?
To render like a cartoon .
^_^ Thanks everyone, I'm really glad you like this piece!!
I don't know of Swiffworks and Inkworks. Are they good? Do you have links? I used "Illustrate" to do the bottom right cel-shaded image (beneath the wireframe) but I haven't tried using Illustrate on my animations yet. Which do people prefer? the cartoon style render or the shaded render?
A couple of days ago someone gave me biped motion capture files for disco dancing which I applied to the monkey and it looks hilarious!! I'll make an animated GIF file of that soon I'm sure you'll enjoy it ^-^ I was really pleased with the walk animation, I think it suits the character fairly well.
Someone recommended that I make him a pair of turntables... maybe I ought to try that sometime this week when I'm not working on my other 3D pieces.

model-
don't take this as a knock on your 3d modeling skills cause that's not what im intending by this comment.
i think the character itself would work better if left as a 2d entity or perhaps you could try cel-shading your 3d model.
animation-
i think your walk is rather stiff. if your not doing stuff for games then you should probably try default max bones (max4 that is) instead of biped they offer an incredibly vast amount of capability and functionality while animating; especially the key frames.
Thanks for your honest responses Tobal#3. I think I agree with you regarding the cel-shaded version of the character, although some people still seem to disagree with me on this. I don't understand what you mean by saying that I should leave it as a 2D entity? What do you think of the cel-shaded version of the character? One problem I have is that I can't output as a SWF (flash) animation with Illustrate because it refuses to acknowledge the texture maps (eyes/mouth/bellybutton) when it outputs to SWF.
As for the animation, it's not perfect I realise this. However I was satisfied enough with it as my first attempt at animation. Perhaps more bounce in the hips would help? I'm keen to stick with bipeds for a while though, and yes I do intend to produce my 3D characters for use in games (that's why I kept the poly count relatively low on this character). Are bipeds really that terrible?
I do have a 4 legged mecha I'm planning on producing, and for that I suspect I'll avoid using the biped (for obvious reasons) and use regular bones. We'll see how that works out ^_^

i wasn't sure if that was the cel-shaded version of that or a just a colored drawing. i think it looks cooler that way - but whatever floats your boat.
as for animation there's just too much to say on that topic in general. i say try to get a copy of "The Illusion of Life" it's a disney book on animation. (otherwords - the animator's bible).
but in the meantime go here: animation meat (http://www.animationmeat.com/index2.html)
and take a look at the pdf files of Notes and the Lecture Notes. it has useful information on animation as told by people in the industry. animation is about understanding movement and observation of real-life and after that you can then apply what you have learned [techniques] and knowledge of animation in general to create your own style of it.
2d entity -
what i meant by this was to just keep it 2d in a cartoon format. i was assuming that you were going to be doing animation shorts with this character and not for games.
biped -
biped is good it's just limiting in what you can and cannot do. in games biped is mainly used to copy animations from one biped to another and for motion capture files. other than that using biped is probably just a personal preference. i like bones better that's all so i have a biasest opinion of it. (i learned max with bones then learned biped for the gaming industry, both biped and bones have their ups and downs it just depends on what you're looking to do i suppose.)
and biped and be used for 4-legged animals just pertend that the hands and arms are its front legs and it's feet are its hind legs. then scale the biped to your creature as you see fit. you can also create tails and ponytails for your biped.
Dammit...
Ther are those times, when it's 1:00am - you're feeling a bit ill, you decide to click on one last page before you go to bed... and it makes you sit there, gritting your teeth and thinking "sh;t... I really wish I'd thought of that" - then you look at that persons site and you think "Sh;t... I reaaallly wish I'd done most of that"
This is one of those times.
Bonofi The Breakbeat Monkey - that is such a ridiculously fantastic name too...
Bugger.
I reaaally love your style of work - I love little bonofi, although I think you should maybe lose his mouth (ala your designs), but it looks great anyway.
I envy you and your style... but then you are about a month older than me, so I'll lie to myself that that's all it is. :surprised
Brilliant.
:applause:
