View Full Version : Dominance War V - 2D - Lappisch - God of Illusion
03-18-2011, 08:24 PM
God of illusion and delusion, the prophet of the mad, the imaginary, and those that have lost touch with the world. Denial, and the constant niggling feeling of looking back and wishing you had done differently. A hungry nostalgia that eats you up and makes monsters.
Part of the final concept sheet:

very good god :)

First dominance war, it took a while to figure out how to post images XD
Here's a sketch for today
03-19-2011, 04:18 PM
Another sketch. A bit too much like a regular demon, I think.
03-19-2011, 05:19 PM
Crazy sketches very expressive style. Looking forward to seeing more
03-20-2011, 03:28 PM
It's too nature esque, but maybe this can be the steed?
I want to keep that girl creature though
03-20-2011, 06:17 PM
I like the latest sketch the contrast between the energy like female and the tree like thing, works well.
03-21-2011, 05:04 AM
So, I think I got the head down for this guy
Long way to go :O
03-21-2011, 02:23 PM
Amazing sketches. The nature one is something that I would even put as my pc background if it would ever be finished. I like the way the last concept has the feel of glass to it. Overall you have an excellent range of colours, lighting and dynamism to it. Keep up the stunning work!
03-21-2011, 10:39 PM
Sk8erWolf: Thanks very much :)
Phoenix-06: Thank you, I'm hoping to keep a sharp contrast between male, female, will see about that
Darkonerster: Hee, thanks, some of these concepts I might even keep. I hope to have a surrealistic effect with my final picture, while keeping the God humanoid, so back to work!
03-21-2011, 10:47 PM
Interesting concepts! I like the loose and undefined brushwork as it's an awesome way of generating ideas! Gets your mind wandering off :)
Looking forward to see more!
03-22-2011, 12:49 AM
the last sketch is amazing!!
03-22-2011, 01:40 AM
Great sketches all around. I love the first and the last. Nice job!
03-22-2011, 11:36 PM
Solblomma: Thanks, rough brushes are the best for the sketching
Derricksong: Thanks very much!
Adam-Bomb: Thank you :)
Alright, I think my rough idea should be like this. Some sort of warlord figure, but contrasted by an almost confusingly innocent creature curled in his arm
03-23-2011, 12:32 AM
These are amazing!
I especially like the first one... I think the surreal style would definitely help define your character.
Can't wait to see more!
03-23-2011, 04:30 AM
03-23-2011, 06:02 PM
that last one you posted looks sick! The whole innocent girl thing is a brilliant idea!
03-23-2011, 08:29 PM
yea the last one is looking massive.. love the contrast of soft vs hard, good vs evil. are those black silhouettes on his right shoulder supposed to be ravens? could be a nice touch.
03-23-2011, 10:10 PM
LOLIverrr: Thanks, I figure illusion pairs great with surreal aspects, so maybe I'll look into that category even
Sk8erWolf: Thank ya :)
Digiegg: Thanks! I think the girl helps flesh out the idea so I'll go with it
fellah: Thank you :D Yeah, I was thinking of those two ravens from norse mythology, huggin and muunin or something
03-23-2011, 11:32 PM
Nice, I am looking out for this one as well!
03-25-2011, 02:02 AM
PavelSokov: Thanks I will try not to disappoint ^_^
I toyed with the idea of a giant shield or something, but I figure if it's illusion I should make it more subtle XD
I think I've got the concept down. Now I'll do some details, the back view, maybe give him a steed, etc.
03-25-2011, 02:31 AM
One comment : wow!
Out of curiosity, how long did it approximately take you to do this concept from scratch? I know you began with the head but if you lets say didn't do the concept before that, how many hours did you spend doing it?
03-26-2011, 12:47 AM
Darkonerster:Thanks :) I'd say around two to three hours. It's a bit long for a bw concept, but I made a mess of the right arm and decided to redo that part XD
Cool concept and sketches. The last one is really nice. The idea of the girl is a cool touch for sure. Maybe the pose is a bit unbalanced, only a comment :). Again, cool work and looking forward for more updates. Cheers!!
03-27-2011, 01:43 PM
Ferx: Yeah, balance is probably my greatest weakness, can't get symmetry to save my life. Hopefull, though, I can tinker out a pose that will take away the impression XD
Here is the book of stories that the god carries. Most likely his pose won't show it in great detail, but here it is haha. I decided he needed a less conventional weapon, not overtly violent.
But definitely a bit creepy.
03-27-2011, 06:02 PM
That godly being only need to say boo, and i would probably wet my pants.
Keep whoppin', Lappisch!
03-28-2011, 11:44 AM
Puiart: Haha, thanks! But I think the design is very rough. It will become a little more elegant in the coming days :)
03-28-2011, 04:05 PM
Hey I love that book! But make sure to keep the chains on it black. The white chains don't seem to make sense.
03-28-2011, 04:42 PM
I am still tripping with the first concepts man jejeje! looking awesome very original.
03-29-2011, 06:09 PM
GREAT work here! Lovely lovely sketches. The way you start so loose with your brush strokes is really awesome. More please :)
04-01-2011, 03:22 AM
PavelSokov: Ah, you're right, it'd suit the color scheme better too :)
Gyorkland: Thanks! Now that the brainstorming is out of the way...
arokz: Thank you :D
Lots of changes!
So I let the image stew for a few days, came back and tweaked away. I figured, if I'm making a god of illusion, why am I making him all armored and stuff, right?
Anyway, the new design is more elegant, I think, and suits the theme better.
I'll start the back view soon and try to finish off the body sheet this weekend
04-01-2011, 05:08 PM
Damn you guys, you are such an inspiration!
I really like this design, can't wait to see more
04-09-2011, 04:41 AM
Zykras: Thanks very much! Been busy, but new post in a few hours :D
04-09-2011, 05:09 AM
I cant wait for the next one :)
04-09-2011, 07:58 AM
I like the silhouette very much !
04-10-2011, 10:03 PM
Arokz: And it took me long enough :)
lepilo: Thank! Hopefully I can get more than silhouettes here soon.
Ah, finally, his steed. It's not a gargantuan thing, so I have a size comp up. This will be part of the final body sheet.
04-20-2011, 03:39 AM
Color scheme decided on. Decided not to include the steed because, well. Too much is too much ^_^;
04-20-2011, 07:36 AM
Nice colour and concept~keep it up! GL
04-20-2011, 09:05 AM
Great style and character design! I love what you did with colors in your last image. I'm sure it'll turn out great. Good luck!
04-22-2011, 05:18 PM
Kexin: Thanks :D
ersinerturk: Thanks, hopefully this will be the direction it goes :)
wip, I'll try to keep uploading regularly and not waste spring break, hah

Your painting is very rich with texture and colors are really nice. Cant wait to see you continue to flesh it out. Your painting technique is very interesting as well, more! :)
04-30-2011, 03:05 AM
arokz: Thank you, I hope I can finish in time :)
05-13-2011, 05:42 AM
I have a really hard time understating what the character actually looks like but the background is absolutely gorgeous to look at and discover all the crazy and beautiful details.
