I never got this questioned answered. What exactly is the best form of modelling on 3DStudioMax? Is it Editable Mesh or something?
Thanks.

It all depends on a)what you wanna model, b)what the model is gonna be used for and the useage format, and c)whether its gonna be animated, and the nature of the animation...and there are probably loads of other factors.

That may seem like a copp-out answer but its true.

However, now in Max4 Editable Mesh is great, and I think Polygon Mesh even better (right click-convert to PolyMesh, etc) as it has even more convenient tools for box modelling, which can be smoothed out with Meshsmooth modifier.

nurbs are complicated, very powerful, and can be fiddly.

Spline cages can be great for doing heads and organic things (like NURBS are) but need more planning. Do this by creating spline objects, attaching them together, making sure you have 3 or 4 sided cage sections (vertices welded too), then adding the Cross Section, then Surface mods.

But box modelling in Editable Mesh/Polygon Mesh is really great now and used in most things in 3ds amx nowadays, though I know NURBS/Spline cages are cool too, and ofcourse PATCHES--these are good for organic heads & bodies too.

Box modelling is light for games stuff, NURBS etc good for bending character animation, though all work for most things--depends on how you like to work!!

Actually, I prefer subdivision modelling for everything. With it you can make anything you want, and it produces good clean models.

People rely less and less on NURBS nowadays, subdivs are just so much easier.

to me all depends of what i need to do !! several ways to reach the need... i don't take part for one modeling way !! but read this one :

Meshsmooth is probably the most versatile for organic stuff - but if you use Max for a while you'll find yourself jumping from one method to another as it is.

But my theory still stands:

If you are in doubt, Lathe everthing.

this is my opinion:

for me for organic ,and normal cases i prefer subdivision modeling , poly in combination with meshtools and polytools.
For characters is always my choice.
you can see a great characters in this forum done with this tecnic.

Only in special cases like cars or things with the same complication in surfaces I prefer spline .

But for make industrial objects the best are nurbs and the correct program for me is not max is rhino,

Now with rhino with plugin meshtools have a great exportation to max.
