The first image looks to earthy. I think that later ones capture more of a alien color palette.

ficolo

Hi guys,

Yes the frist sketch is a test similar to the Heart but not good.
My idea is to create a alien world remittent of the enormous Canyon whit innatural bio-archs as connect the Canyon extremity.

I hope do a good work

Updated my Concept Work

Your latest addition is definatley a nice improvement. it has a very handsome painterly quality.

My favorite aspect of this image is how the land, sky, sun, and moon all sort of blend together, by virtue of the color as well as the texture.

I might also like to see more of those glowing holes within the chasm, they're cool.

I'm too sure if you need the stream, it might take away from the earthy-ness of the image.

Not too sure, just thinking out loud.:)

Good job.

well this is very good! i like it, but i think that u may have more things on the planet, it looks very very empty.. or maybe its just me-- i really would like to see how you will model the rocks, it is something that is difficult to me to achive.. ok, good luck! and show us more of your work!

ficolo

yes the planet is very empty becouse I work on subjects to insert in the scene and avoid to crate simile whit other ....
For the cracked rocks I hope to do my best...:p

amazing texture. The only thing to remember is that the cracking needs to stop at the edge of the cliff. Since rock is made up of strata they will always be horizontal unless there was uplift or earthquakes. keep going.

I love the composition and the individual textures. I thin the only thing I'd change is that fade-transition between the sand-colored rock to the dark-rock...it looks kind of off. Maybe shorten the fade overall and make it a little more random.

I really like the direction your work is taking. Great composition and color. I think you have a strong concept of the project and its goals.

ZrO-1
11-04-2003, 01:49 AM
Wow, I really like the transition between the "sandy" surface rock and the darker bed rock now. It feels much more wind-blown and worn-down now. The transition also looks more realistic where the rock forms definite layers with a melded transition between the two.
It gives the impression that something drastic occured over a relatively short ammount of time to cause a change in the sediment that accumulated on the surface of your planet.

camdoggz
11-04-2003, 11:07 AM
Yeah I agree with ZrO-1,

I also like that outcrop of rock right in the forground, as it adds nicely to the depth ofthe picture and the balance of the composition

Just curious about how you're maknig the 3D scene. Do you make in in nurbs or Polys with sub-ds? And what about texture mapping? Are you mappnig the top then the sides and then the bottom i thought i saw a seem at the top edge?

I'm just currious. I've never really done a huge landscape with big vallies like that. Usualy only one plane of ground.

If you got any pointers, that'd be great.

I think if you are gonna leave those branch things, you have to put a lot more. And I think the sky needs some work. Try a normal blue sky of some sort getting much darker at the top, seeing the stars through. Try it;)

This is a wip of my work
I'm creating the planet atmosphere. The Atmosphre is very dense and gaseous. I created more layer of clouds and I used the max procedural texures for clouds - blurnoise - because it has more level of details respect to standard 3dsmax noise. I mixed blurnoise with smoke in different layers.

xi-on
11-11-2003, 08:40 PM
Hm i think the view on the clouds in the background feels wrong. Try to "bend" the clouds at the very end of this sky to a curve fitting the planets bent. (Imagine 2 nested spheres. one small inside a Large one. If you stand on the small one looking straight you 'll look over the bent of the inner sphere onto the large one. (oh man i can't explain that in english though.) that might give the horizon a more natural look...it just might.

Very well done though!
good job keep up :)

Hey thats rulez =)
I want to share you some ideas, if you agree.

1.How `bout some nuclear holes on surfaces, like this world weren`t lost, it was destroy`d ,huh?

2.Maybe some space craft on orbid?

It all IMHO, remember =)

anyway u r pro

blindsleeper

hi m1g,
for the nuclear holes, they are in the scene. ;)
I don't use the space craft because this is a lost world, where apparently there is no more life.

Hi to everybody,
a lot of graces for your comments and suggestions.
Surely the landscape will have enriched from other details and elements.
As it regards the clouds, they are not definitive and only a test to try the shader
of the clouds that I am creating. In fact the principal objective of this job is that to recreate all the maps in procedural way.

However thanks for everything :wip:

I'm diggin the clouds myself. though, I do have to agree about the idea of them moving off into the background... right now it looks as though you mapped it onto a flat surface behind the planet... I also was wondering if your going to use more dynamic camera angles? I'd like to see a couple of other angles... one from down low looking up through the cavern past the horizontal tree like things.... I'd also like to get a closer shot of those craters... I guess, right now it feels like there is no refference to scale...

excellent work..... keep it up! :buttrock:

-your updated pic<- awsome man...thats good that your adding that alien rock. Add more and It will make your pic even better. By the way the pic bellow, I thought you might be interested to hear some pointers.

http://pacific.photoisland.com/sessions/60088861783/22003044.jpg

1. Add another creater on the left side of the terrain, just to add something there and to balance the composition of your pic...

2....I thought you might set up your planet/moons like this to balance your composition. You know three up there & three down here (where the creaters are). Just look at the pic I drew and your eyes travels back and forth on your composition nicely [the ying and yang, balance idea]... [From your Nov 11 image you posted up, I liked that you have the moons & stars at the BG ] Keep in mind not to let that 'medium moon' I drew to come out of your composition. It looks more better if its inside the compostion. No tangents no distractions, better balance of objects and paterns.

peace man...keep it up

Generally a great work. I like the lil towers and rocks you added, and also the foreground. Its a great scene with great mood and great textures. :applause:

The Sky looks still a bit wild and distracts from the mood, the contrast is too high, and the volumefog over the craters and dthe river btm right looks messy.

Idea: darken the whole scene a bit, make less ambient light (global illumination)incl. sky (also the sun, the which is too dominant) so the green, will have more effect, and raise your groundfog, to give more athmospheric deep to your scene.

Good luck and keep on rockin', greetz:thumbsup:

dude...cmon you have an amazing scene going on right now. your ground looks amazing and the scale is great, but if you have to use a lense flare make it almost not even there. i think it is a little cheezy but thats just one persons opinion...so...just becareful with the lense flare and your other "moon" on the horizon. you start to lose the moon and it tends to look like a part of the flare. just becareful. great work though.

-whoa! man, this scene is coming along...it looks great!!...
For me about the lens flare, It looks like you're there, looking down at the cliff and see this 'Lost Alien World'. The work you have here is simple but it tells alot. Your stuff is sick cuz it gives me goosebumps now, just looking at it..hahah...Damn man, awsome! I think it needs now is some touch ups, here's some pointers:

http://www.webpost.net/jd/jdbpix/121603.JPG
-i like those green gas, maybe give a sense of direction to where the wind is going.
-the rocks, give it some depth by putting bigger rocks close to the FG and lil ones going to the BG. Actually I like it too how you spread it out all over the place but put the different scales of rocks man...it will give more to the illustion of depth and scale

...whoa! goosebumps again! hahaha...awsome!!!

Impressive, well, it is hard to suggest something or to give good comment for this work you are going very deep, try to change that lens flare i didn't find it agreeable it damaged depth quality also it is very eyecatching, you need to work better for the gas, i agree with Bungjo about gas and i think you should give it more distance,(opinion) all comments written to you after your last post was very interesting and full of suggestions and opinions.

Hey, it looks really good.
About those tubes with lights coming out (looks like bridges or logs..), I think you should rotate a few of them to make it look non-linear..
You have the first two lined up in the exact same angle so to say, and it makes it obvious that it is the same object.
Other than that I think your picture is great. I look forward to see some of those mountain peaks put in.

Happy modeling and keep it up.

Ciao Francesco!

I've just written this answer into my thread and I think this smoketrick would work great on your green craterfog, maybe you try it:

rept0r: Thanks, here's the trick, the plasma is very very easy to do. I made 2 tubes and inside each other, delete the caps, then with softselection pull the lower parts a bit out till I have something like a thin drop. Where the verts have more distance to each other, I local use meshsmoth. Now the optic is done with mapping. I use a celular map (white divisions, black cells) of a quiet big size (experiment around with the cellsize, in this case 325), use this as transparence map ((=oppacity) in this special case, i used a gradient as mixamount for a mixmaterial, let the black be black and used the celmap as white channel: first, i can let it appear later like this from invisable just changing the output and colorposition, second, i can let it disappear now in the distance) and pull an instance of the mixmap on selfillumination, specularlevel, bump and displacement (amount 35) and define the advanced transpancy type (extended parameters) to be additive. The diffuse color is set on a simple lightblue, and the specular color on a light cyan. Its great, because you can animate this later very easy, just animating the materialslot (coordinates and phase). and to support this looking like light, I placed a lightblue spotlight under the beam with a very slight amount that casts no shadow. See, it IS simple. This also works on objects like smoke, cigarette smoke, clouds or plasmarings and any background deepspace thing like the milkyway.... or (without the displacemet) on any Ghostlike characters. The favour of modeled lighteffects is that you have 100% controll of size, stucture, oppacity, color or whatever. If you have small resources, model the smoke in a still on a high vertical plane or a tube or whatever you gave mappingcords, turn and pull the verts a bit around (displace manually) then use meshmooth and let the displacementmap away, displacementmaps take much resources because it takes a high polycout to make them look good. Have fun with that!:wip:
Greets and keep rockin'

not much too say... the atmosphere is just exactly alien :)

I really like the image so far, I think the noise setting on the clouds in the background could be tweak it looks a bit too procedural. My tendency for opinion is if it looks distinctly mathematical or rythmical/procedural you do not the variablity inherent in nature which appears to be random but really is not, just too complex for us to preceive as structured (which is debatable in context the challenge) but anyway the other thing is the colors as previously stated I like the mood of it, its vary Mars-ish, have you thought about maybe remnants of indiginous life or adding the visual variabilty around the edges of the crack further out I mean. The lense flare could be made unique as well, maybe customize it in the comping it or use a series of poly transparencies on a line with alien shapes, that are not distinct to our type of cameras.

Quizboy
01-13-2004, 01:01 AM
drop the lens flare, let the light play in the clouds instead or something.

make those gases float either left or right with the wind like that one dude suggested, or even angled upward a bit to get that off blance feel and a sense of movement in the pic. good luck

Final Image title: The Lost Alien World

Mars has been the subject of my inspiration for this image.
Mars, in terms of distance, is the nearest alien world to the Earth and it also stimulated for years our fantasy about alien population. I reproduced two different ambients to recreate the mysterious atmospheres and the mistery which lies behind the desolation of the landscape.
The red and the coloured ambient represent two different views of Mars, the one it show us every day and the other in the darkness with little green lights which represents all that we don't know yet or that we would like to found if we could explore indeep the surface of the planet... The Lost Alien World.

hey impressive work...
hey this is for everyone... who ppl can afford to render 3500 *2500 px. or so images.. i guess almost none.. except for ppl.. who submitted just spheres and boxes... well sorry for that.... i think if artists are using tools like GI... and a billion polygon scene.. hardly anyone can afford to render such a high res image..
i just want to request ppl.. participants to .... to make a collective request for this..
it can be like.. u submit a decent res. image.. if u win.. then u r given time to re-render the same scene again for poster print and stuffs.. this way the winner can even use his NEW-ALIENWARE machine for this purpose... i guess not every artist is rich enough to have a hyper machine for this purpose...
if the CG TALK/CG CHALLENGE CREW is listening to this post.. then kindly reply back with a suitable decision.....
thanks to all cg talk feiends...

ficolo,

Beautiful!!!! I see this on the cover of a book or magazine....really, really nice work!! :applause:

But I have one concern. The final image is missing the nice mist effect you had over the water. I also noticed that the planet on the horizo is almost invisible and almost doesn't look like a planet now. Did you do this intentionally? While I love this image...it's not as powerful as the prior render with the clouds over the water.

Good luck on the competition!
