A visitor to this planet would think they were witnessing armageddon, however it is mearly the birth of a new day. The night sky is tearing apart to reveal daylight shining from behind. VERY rough sketch but I had to get something up...

starting to head the direction I want. Though the "terrain" will end up much larger as though looking down from a very high peak.

edit: spelling

ok, I am going to abondon the "rocky" look for a more gaseous one. I would love to hear some crits, or does it just suck that bad? :P

Im really liking this man...

With your center plasma ball-Why not try and make the enire thing out of particles...or use FLAME and volume fog and such. Keep it away from being a 'solid' ball...

Also-there is a freeware plugin somewhere online that creates lighting-it could be of help! I think its called (get this) LIGHTNING. Amazing how they come up with these names...

Keep us updated!

thanks Pyke and great suggestions. The original plan was to have particles streaming from the peaks of the "thing" to the ball. I like your idea of particles or fog to make up the ball. Still an emormous amount of work and detail to go. The whole thing may still change to more of a gaseous theme :)

here are some "things" I may use in my scene. Trying to make them look less plant like. They eject balls of condensed gas that slowly expand to form the atmosphere.

Your overall modeling is nice and so are your concepts, but I feel it would improve greatly if you spent some more time working out a colour-scheme. Especially in the last pic you posted, the colours really don't work together very well...

very good Ideas i like the (Shooters) if i can name them,
mixing everything together will give nice look and nice composition just give atmosphere some more of your Ideas...

Stefan - your right on about the colors, that has always been my achilies heel. I have decided to scrap the idea of the "cave scene" in favor of a more open less "terrain driven" scene. Thanks for your crits - keep em coming :D

Designer - thanks for the compliments. I like the shooters too and within 3 months I should figure out how to use em. :)

sticking with this. lots of detail to go. Crits are EXTREMELY encouraged...thanks in advance :)

WOW not taking you much time to do this modeling!! don't know wether this is a good thing or a bad! agree you must spend some more time on them but as they are concepts its ok. glad to see some shots of the veiwports too. not many people posting them, nice to see how other people model.... Finchy.

thanks finch! I have only textured the foreground terrain and pillar things, still playing with lighting. I fear my computer wont be able to handle my final render :(

I like the murky feel to it all. I agree with the Yoshi guy's thought that you should focus a bit more on a color scheme. That will always add a big punch to the final image.

You might also consider tinkering with those rock columns some more. It's fairly evident that they were just duplicated from a single one. Duplication is okay, don't get me wrong, but you need to vary the geometry in each one after you've made the duplicate. Make them look like they were each formed separately. Stretch faces, punch holes, move vertexes, etc.

Otherwise, looking good. I know what you mean about not knowing if a computer can handle a render. I guess that's why you're part of this contest, eh?

great crit vrf, thanks! What do you mean by focus on color though? Are the colors off or just not enough of em. Thanks :)

cool- but i think it could be better if you play with lightning contrasts in stage for giving little bit dramatism

Thanks centavrus, can you elaborate a little on what you mean by stage?

Here is the base image with some PS thrown in. Working on the color...I may also move the hairy thing to the left and put a cliff on the right

What the Yoshi guy probably meant, and what I mean, is to try to establish a sound color scheme, one that takes advantage of what colors can do. For example, you might choose to have a strong color contrast, using colors that compliment each other, like orange and blue. (opposites on the color wheel.) I think your last mock-up is getting closer. Maybe continue the thought by trying a fiery orange foreground with a blue-green background? This color scheme would have the added benefit of making your image appear more "vast," as cool colors tend to look further away.

Here's a bit more info on color schemes:

Good luck!
