View Full Version : Better than Editable Mesh?
javierdl 06-04-2002, 03:29 AM Hi all,
I recently found a tutorial on "Building Organic Characters Using Editable Mesh and Meshsmooth in MAX R2.5 by Neil Blevins" (
http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/tut05/tut05.htm (http://) ). However, since this was back in 1998, I thought of asking around if this technique would still be considered the/or one of the best techniques for organic character modeling today.
Thanks in advance for any tips, comments, or the like,

The basis of it still valid. With the latest version of max however, using an Editable Poly (instead of an editable mesh) along with 2 scripts (available at scriptspot.com) 'CSPolytools' & 'Meshtools' makes for a far better workflow. Also the Meshsmooth modifier itself is a lot better at retaining mapping.
Note that you have integrated subdivision & creasing with the editable poly!

Hi Chris,
I finally downloaded and installed the following:
1. MeshTools, 2. csPolyTools, and 3. PolyMeshTools
Unfortunately I don't think I installed the csPolyTools correctly. Firstly, I remember have been confused as to how to proceed to properly install it, as the instructions only say:
"Run the script from the maxscript menu, and it'll install itself. Restart Max, and the functions will be available for you under the heading "csPolytools" to stick on buttons or your quad."
Now, keep in mind I have done this type of thing like twice in my life and HTML is the closest I get to programming
This been said, how can I follow those instructions literally when there are 8 ".mcr" scripts and 2 ".ms" scripts. I did notice that one of the .mcr files is called "mcr.run" but MaxScript doesn't see it, and even if I choose "Show All Files" in the run script window it doesn't run it. I also thought maybe I had to invert the name for the extension as this would make more sense, but didn't work either. So I ended up placing the files manually, the problem is that although I was able to create a "Toolbar", the buttons don't seem to work. Not to mention that the documentation shows a different type of controls, look at the image below:

Could you please enlighten me :lightbulb

CSPolytools come in a file with the .mzp extension, which is basically a Max-specific zip file. To install a .mzp file you go to Maxscript-->runscript and point it at the .mzp file. Max will unpack and install all the files for you, making sure all the scripts go to the correct dirs.
If you have changed it to .zip it will open just like any zip file but you won't know where to put anything, so if that's the case change the extension back to .mzp and run it like the instructions tell you to.

I knew I was missing something important.
One more question though, the name of the file I downloaded is: "cspolytools.mzp.zip", should I remove the ".zip" extn ?
Thanks in advance,

Now I understand that the "zip" extn was there only to keep the file from getting its code scrambled when making it available online. So removing it was the only thing I had to do.
Thanks again to all,
