I have a problem wit BANDING in photoshop.

Hi,
This is my first time asking for help on a forum and please excuse my english.

I am working at some underwater world painting in photoshop CS3 and a notice that when I use eraser (airbrush soft round) on some layer that is transparent (say 80%) I got banding.

My document is 8000 X 4000 pix 72 dpi RGB 8bits/channel.
I have attached the JPG example with my problem

PLEASE HELP

Adrian

8 bits is the problem. Try 32 bits and see a world of difference. Or at least 16 bis.

Would not make any difference - you are still limited to the 8bit colour range of a tft screen. So, internally it would be smooth, but the output will still have banding.

You are using a limited range of dark colours over a large area - which will display that banding, whether you work at 8 bit, or at 32bit. Those are the limits of your screen. I just tested your colour setup in 32bit, and I got similar banding.

Try to dither the colours, which will reduce or eliminate the banding.

another trick is to add a bit texture to the shadow. it will break the shadow into patches and make it harder for the eye to pick it up.
