Just curious--mostly so I am on the same page with Mental Ray colleagues---is there an equivalent to FG in c4d? If so, would it be IR QMC or is it a different beast altogether?

I've found different definitions which are mostly app-specific
From what I've read, sounds like Final Gather has more in common with irradiance maps in c4d?

yes is similar in some ways.
photon mapping, irradiace map and other are all gather methods. mr just used another name
