I must have had the cursor over that panel while I pressed some button/s. Anyhow, now I no longer have the things I used to have there. One of them used to show me how many vertices/objs/polys/etc were selected, for instance.

Yeah, it looks like you accidentally collapsed the editor's header (or technically footer?). Try looking to the very far right and clicking the + button to get it back.
