WHHHEEEE HAAWW

Using Max 5 and Photoshop

Starting up something new, this town will be the in th background for a highnoon shoot out scene I'm doing with a demon and some other gunslinger. The image here is for the Saloon and the pool hall.

They are both fairly lo poly since they will be in the background so I don't think I'll need too much geometry detail. Was thinking I might add a sand like layer to the buildings texture to give them a windswept/weathered type look. Also need to add in some of the smaller details like chairs on the deck, rope, tumbleweeds, you know that sort of stuff

So far I've also finished modeling a Livery and a Whore House, but haven't put any textures on them yet. I'll throw up some images tomorrow or something.

Nedd to know if they look fairly realistic enough, or to fakish. Do you think the buildings look to rigid or stright I guess, or should they have more slack to them. If anyone has some comments or crits feel free to drop'em. Also if you want to throw in some ideas for buildings or background stuff let me know. I was thinking a scene like the end of Clint Eastwood's 'A Few Dollars More', anyway let me know waht you think.

two things which grab me about the stair...

First it doesn't appear that the stairs are casting a shadow on the building. Also might want to dirty up the textures a bit more under the stairs.

Second the stair steps appear to float against the building. They need something structural to carry their weigth on the building side. it could be a stringer under them against the building, or two by four chocks under the steps, against the building. As it is it doesn't appear that they could bear any load.

Other than those two items, I think it looks cool.

I'm currently working on a similar scene at work right now, however the one I'm working on is more of a run down ghost town....anyway, while you said this would be more of a background item, so it's up to you, a few things that would help it... Add some wair and tear on your mesh, make it not so perfect. Usually buildings like this they would have some irregularities to the boards and often not built the best ever. Try moving your polys off center here and there to add some irregularities, all angles look to perfect right now. I would also add some windows, or signage at least on the big building, right now it is not only uninteresting to look at just the yellow wood planks, but also doesn't seem very realistic. I'm assuming it's painted wood, also maybe try chipping it up in areas or have it weather worn, maybe some bullet holes? The wood textures on the front pillars look to new compared to the other woods...now, lets see those other models that will be showed up close..

Well took me longer to post an update than I expected.

Thanks for the replies, I went ahead and made some changes.

Electrofirma - Yeah you right those stairs do look kinda odd with the shdow missing. Think i'll have to go and paint it in manually. I did go in and build up the other side so it is no longer flaoting in the air, put a block onder each step as well, though they are hard to see.

Rhid1en - Heh I'd be interested to see your scene, If of course you are able to show it off. I think wild west cowboy stuff is interesting and kinda rare compaired to the other genre's that get shown alot. Took your advice and messed around with the mesh some, making the achitecture look a bit warped. Kinda hard to see, but you can notice on the yellow building the best. Went ahead and added some paint chips as well. Wasn't going to add any windows to the building, however it will have an large sign on the front, haven't got around to maing the texture yet.

Also I'm putting up one of the gunslingers that will be in the piece, she'll be in the midground. Planning on having the other guys boot in the foreground to the side, just the back of it. Some of you might have seen her before, she was up in the wip section for a while. Any additional comments or crits on her I'd love to hear.

I think some people are loosing site of the fact that this is going to be in the background? I think it may be getting a little too detailed and will distract the focus from the action. I'd be interested to see how this will fit in to the scene. Will it be out of focus and remain in the background or be a part of the action? That's the big question. It looks good so far, but maybe it's looking too good...you know? I'll keep an eye out. Will this be an animation or a static scene? Looking forward to seeing how this evolves..I'm a sucker for western-style art work and entertainment and the sci-fi/goth twist given with the female character is pretty interesting as well.
