Dood, this is awesome. I really like the colors! the forms remind me of Giger <sp> Shown alot of creativity here. I would like to see a more detailed sketch, but if u see it in your head clearly enough, which I'm beting u do, then lets see some modeling! I'm excited.. keep up the good work

Really nice. Like the colors on that second one

This will look great in 3d
Keep it up

Hello, just wanted to say that your design rocks and that it has much potential!

tr1cky
11-08-2003, 04:14 AM
Thanks for all the comments guys. I only added a little to the concept, been too damn busy.

The final colors will probably be quite different from those. I'll probably go for a darker overall image, with greater contrasts. But anyway, time to start on modeling, i'm way behind :p

Superb! First entry that really made me stop and look really closely. I can’t wait for the 3D version. The composition is really strong, great movement.

I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this one. Lots of implied detail in your drawing. Please make sure it makes it into 3D!

Great, great idea.

Started modeling it finally. It was pretty hard to set up the viewport right so it looks like the concept painting, but I will probably adjust it anyway as I go along. This is gonna take forever :P

Your sketches have a lovely energy to them...you capture movement and power extreamly well! If you can capture that same energy and movement in your 3d rendidtion, you will surely have a very good contender here!!!

And as for measuring up the viewport and sketch, but ur sketch as your background, and align it that way...

More modeling. Rendered under a skylight. Sorry for the small size, but even at this res, it took forever. I can't imagine what the final will be like.

Doing more modeling. I'm really behind, seeing as there's still quite a bit of work left to do.. and then texturing and lighting... and then getting the mood right. Plus I'll still have to render the damn thing ;) But it's all in good fun.

Holy frick fraceting flippin, flip flap. Man they should just give you one of those computers right now so you can have the extra power to finish this awesome work!!! I very rarely ever comment on wip's - meaning this is one incredible piece. I actually bookmarked this thread when I saw your first concept image wondering how you would put this in 3D and I'm not disappointed in the least.
Go tri1cky go!

lol, thanks aurora, chad :)

The hard work is still ahead though, the textures and final composition is gonna be tough. I'll post some shader tests soon that I'm working on... the color scheme I think might change from my concept a bit.

Impressive, you have nice peice here, i like your models, i also suggest you try to put a new plan for lighting it is the only thing your sketches, modeling and texturing lacks. well, i think speeking about lighting is a little premature. looking forward to see what you are up to.

good luck :)

I hope this helps.

While looking at my image I provided meself with a checklist. and answered it myself as well. Take a good look at your image and ask yourself these questions. If you are satisfied with your answers then your probably on the right track.

Q: You are standing on some unknown alien setting. This location seems to be whispering to you,
A:

Q: you have a feeling that something was created here.
A:

Q: maybe even the land itself is alive.
A:

Q: The location seems unpopulated, but not necessarily abandoned or neglected, nor rusting or decaying,
A:

Q: but life forms are inexistent.
A:

Q: The location where you stand seems to be moving and it is difficult to comprehend its function or intent.
A:

Q: The surfaces and materials that surround you are nothing like you have ever seen before.
A:

Q: The design and layout of the location defies logic or the laws of physics, though only slightly, it seems that reality here is somewhat obscure.
A:

Q: You feel a sense of grandness and awe, your breath is coming in short tight gasps from witnessing this alien phenomenon as it starts to overwhelm you. You cry out, "Is anyone there?"
A:

Tip#2 – if the lights are on, then somebody must be there.
Tip#3 – Freezing grapes suspends their animation.

Dear colleagues in the cg arts,
I have scanned through almost all your works. In my book all of you are winners. Because we were all pushed to the very outskirts of our creativity and having so much fun at the same time. Your imagination is truly unique, inspirational, and your own original creation. Nobody can take that away from you. Remember that. But, the reality of things…is reality itself. Someone has to contain our imagination to an acceptable level. Whether it be a client, our boss, or the general public. We know what we want but they know what is best. Rules and regulations are definitely on reality’s corner. I am not saying reality is the enemy of imagination. Since imagination has no rules then we are in a better position to comprehend.
Frank Lloyd Wright was a genius but his imagination was contained within the boundaries of the structures. So was Spielberg and his movies, and so are each and everyone of you and your design…think about it.

good luck and do remember....

"WE CREATE, WE IMAGINATE"

Ok, here we go. I'll follow up with variants and changes I've made over time:

This is the yellowish version I was playing with...
http://www.syntheticreality.net/game/Concept/Overworld/overworld3d.jpg

And here is another perspective of it:

http://www.syntheticreality.net/game/Concept/Overworld/overworld3e.jpg

tr1cky
01-18-2004, 11:26 PM
But I wanted the image colder. The Overworld is about to transcend, in a matter of speaking, so it is leaving everything behind and moving to a new state of being. That means all the energy is rising and drifting away and what is left behind is cold and barren, so a warm feeling to this place would not really fit. Here is colder versions of the shaders...

Here is one of the renderings that is coming more close to the final.

tr1cky
01-18-2004, 11:34 PM
I sort of wanted to add more detail to things as there didn't seem to be enough. So I thought I would break up the ground in the center and add another city-like formation there that'd hint at a stronger level of civilization. Although this will be shaded with some kind of self-illuminated material so it will not look like a city per se.

Besides that, the center object bothered me a little so I wanted to rework that as well. Here is one of the new wireframes:

http://www.syntheticreality.net/game/Concept/Overworld/overworldWire2N.jpg

tr1cky
01-18-2004, 11:42 PM

This is the latest (and final) wireframe of the reworked scene with new geometry. You can see the lighting structure in it with some directional and omni lights. I only have 16 lights in the scene (and only 2 of those 'main'), simply because my computer can't handle more at rendertime. But this should be enough...

eska - thanks ! The newest version differs from the other two I've posted in color, it's too bad it takes so long to render or else I'd post it now, but I'll have to wait for tomorrow probably.

The first of a few 100% zoom texture renders I will do. I'll probably do two or three more just so various sections of the image can be seen. Also the lighting is subject to change a little in the post-effects stage.

Thanks guys. The hardest part is putting it all together into a coherent scene that looks badass, right? :P

And yeah, I am trying to make it very solid, there's no transparent materials in my scene, mostly because I want this a planetary environment but with unnatural composition. So let me know if I succeeded once I post the final! :)

Great work both of you btw!

Well, here it is, the final image.

---------------------------
Overworld, the nature's drive for self-perpetuation through evolution. Depicted here is an old world encased in a fully organic mantle, the near-sentience of which has just realized the death of the patron star. To preserve life, the planet itself needs to transcend physical substrate and funnel itself as an energy beam to the nearest star. This is the last moment of movement, of gathering of the energy, and the release of the living planet's inherent force in search of a new home. An abandoned outpost of an ancient race will find itself as the first of many sites from which the Overworld will release itself into the cosmos.
----------------

Thank you everybody for your support, it's been great, tons of work, but I loved every moment of it. See you next challenge! ;)
