First layout idea that came to me. It took me awhile to come up with something that I felt was truely as alien as I can wrap my non-alien brain around. ;)

Alternate layout, I like the idea of the chasm opening into a desolate plain, it gives a more awe-inspiring effect.

Closeup of one of the floating 'orbs'. In case my totally l33t sketch is a bit vauge :p this is supposedly an organic plant that grows underwater, supported by small gas-filled orbs, with the top orb having a lens apature on top to collect light.

Closeup of the bottom of the orb plant, toying with the idea of having the plants growing over a derelict structure or ship of some sort.

Same basic idea and layout as the last sketch, but more visual activity for the eye to investigate.

Just getting a feel for the composition's placement and proportions using simple shapes for all the basic elements. I realize it's very dark at this point, there's only 2 lights at this point, the sun/star and a low ambience.
I can already tell that this is going to be a lot of fun to flesh out. :)

Not so sure I like where this is going, the water surface twisting off isn't as good looking as I'd hoped it'd be, even without all the dressings. It just dosent seem to 'fit'. Maybe I'll switch it for some atmospheric effects, or I cold scrap the whole scene tomorrow if something better comes along, who knows.
Still plenty of time to figure it all out. :)

I'd light up your scene a bit more so we can see what is going on... but the last concept sketch you did is sweet. Alot of stuff going on.

Ramped up all the lights, not a whole lot to see though.

Sick of playing with it tonight, didn't eat anything all day so my blood sugar is shot. :(
