I really liked this feature in max where you could select the faces you wanted and they apply materials to them. Im trying to do the same with maya but it doesnt seem to work, when I do this it applys the material to the whole object instead of just the selected face.

Anything that could help me is appreciated thx =)

If you want to assign a material(shading) to a facet press F11, select facets.
Then assign the material you want... simple, isn't it?:lightbulb

thats what i was saying, if i do it like that, it doesnt assign my material to the facets i selected but to the whole object.

yer don't need to assign a uv map... sorry... i was thinkin of summat different

open up hypershade, find/make the new texture
select the facet(s) and then rightclick on the texture and 'assign to selected'

that should work...

what if the facet you're selecting only needs part of it with textures? i mean, if i have a square polygon, and half of it needs to be the base color and half of it needs to be a texture, how do i make that without having to change the geometry? or is there even a way to do that?
