View Full Version : How to "slide" a vertex along selected edges?

Hi there,

Does anyone know of a way to constrain a vertex to a selection of edges, then translate the vertex relative to this selection?

In other words, I want the edges to stay put, but I would like to be able to slide the vertex along the selected edges.

Thanks in advance to all who contribute and make this a great forum.

Yes, changing the reference coordinate system makes the sense. Try choosing local, or create a grid in that direction and use it with pick custom object.

Ok, I figured it out.

1.) I selected the edges and used the "Create Shape from edges" in the Edit Geometry Rollout.

2.) Created a dummy object

3.) Assigned the "Path Constraint" controller to the dummy objects position and then added as the path the shape created from step 1.

4.) Select the vertex that you want to slide (use soft selection for natural adjustment) then apply a "Linked XForm" and pick the dummy created in step 2 as the control object.

5.) Move the relative position of the dummy along the shape.

6.) Apply Edit Mesh modifier.

I was experimenting around with this and I think this technique as a lot of potential for facial animation and rigging. If you place the splines strategically on the face for the dummys to follow, you could use them to create and animate facial expressions, and subtle muscle contractions.

You could wire the dummys for easier control and to blend motion.

I'm pretty excited about the potential to for facial animation and expression.

I don't know?!?! Give it a shot and let me know what you guys think!!

Wow! All I would do is orbit the view just so, and screen-relative move the point. Eyeballing it sems just so much faster and easier than all that rigamarole;)

johnny_riptide: Ok, your intentions were to animate, i think you were referring to modeling. Sounds cool but a little painful with the linkedxform modifier. Do you know the cluster omatic plugin by diomatic?

just turn the 3D snap and select "edge"

it works if you just want to slide the vertex without modify the orientation of the edge.
