Hello everyone! I came here hoping to get some help from those more experienced than myself in the realm of Cg artwork. I do a pretty large amount of doodling vehicles, tanks and aircraft in a conceptual manner, and have been doing this for a very long time. I would consider myself an intermediate to advanced-intermediate artist, specifically with black and white drawings/studies and have a decent background in art. I have spent more time than I'm willing to admit looking at concept art for various video games as well as sci-fi artwork, and I am finally deciding that cg art may be a hobby that I would enjoy pursuing, at least for fun.

Having said that, I was really hoping to get some guidance on software, as well as art tablets-I've done quite a bit of reading here at cgsociety, but am still unsure about what would be best for me since I am pretty new to this whole digital art thing. Currently I have been experimenting with Corel Painter 11 (currently a free trial version). Since I am a newbie to the cg art scene, I believe this program suits my needs, but are there any other programs that would fit the bill better for a guy like me? From what I can tell, a lot of people use GIMP and Illustrator/Painter, but honestly I'm clueless to a lot of what other programs have to offer in respect to 2D drawing and painting.

The other advantage of Corel Painter would be i can buy it from my College's book store for $100.

The other thing I wanted to ask about was tablets. I was really hoping someone could point me in the right direction with tablets-right now I've been thinking about possibly renting or buying a Wacom Bamboo Fun. Do these tablets follow your pen movements when it is lifted off of the interactive pad? What are among the more popular pads, or what do people here use? And what size would make the most sense? If I am doing studies of objects in a room I tend to be more of an arm drawer, but with what I think I would be using the tablet for (vehicle concept art, etc) I tend to draw smaller and use my wrist more.. would a medium-sized tablet make sense?

Sorry that this post is so long, and thank you in advance for any help you guys can offer. I respect CG artists quite a bit, and I am finally taking some of the steps towards becoming one myself. Right now I am just very unsure about what software and hardware I should be practicing with.

Thanks again!

It depends a bit on how much money you have to 'burn' ;) on software and hardware.

On the software side you have a lot of open source and/or freeware that more or less equates it what is available commercially. For open source painting, have a look at these:

- mypaint - http://mypaint.intilinux.com/
- Krita - http://krita.org/ Still unavailable on Windows, unless you run a virtual machine with virtualbox, but getting there.
- Gimp for general edits.

And if you look around, you can still download a free copy of Expression 3.3 at the Microsoft website (which remains an awesome painterly alternative for Illustrator). Check out the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creature_House_Expression.

Inexpensive:
ArtRage - http://www.artrage.com/
Artweaver - http://www.artweaver.de/index.php/products-en/artweaver-free/

And of course Photoshop, Painter, etc. However, you already did your research, so...

...just try out the software, and decide which feels the most natural/easy to you. For example, I just love to sketch in MyPaint. Its "unlimited" canvas is very helpful, and the community/support is great.

More important is the tablet. Based on your comments I would get a large (PTK-840) Intuos - it will pay for itself in the long run. Do not bother with the Bamboo or anything else. Invest your money in one of these, and the software itself is not too important at the moment, in my opinion. Of course, Painter IS nice to have, but also somewhat expensive. Wacom Intuos 4 comes with a free downloadable copy of Painter SketchPad, btw.
