there definitly should be, just open up xsi online docs and read about weighting, shouldn't be hard to find that section. damn i got to start doing some animi

THe symmetry mapping can slow down incredibly your machine if your object has a lot of polys.
The best way I found to mirror weights is to weight one half, then tag the points of the other half, then run the Enveloppe_Mirror_Tool script add-on. You can find it on XSI Net in General > Property/Weight Maps. This will create a custom toolbar. Just tag the points and hit copy mirror button.
So far it worked flawlessly on several occasion, with a 15000 poly enveloppe.
Be warned: It can take very long to compute (the 15000 poly object took almost 10 minutes).
