actually robots are easiest to setup... Cos all parts are mostly rigid (no bending), you can simply parent the geometry to the bones and the animate the bones with usual setup methods for legs arms etc... go to www.learningmaya.com and look under rigging. There is a ton of tutorials there...

Could you post the wireframe? I think much better to attend the development of your rigging (the robot)
here is a wireframe , the robot isnt 100% finish but i want to do some rigging .

I'm pretty sure this question has been asked a few times before. You should do a search in the forum to get your answer.

hi
i created a file for you to see how i did it
you will need maya 5 to see it
which i hope you have
http://mesh-inc.com/rob_1.rar
download it from that link above
basically you smooth skin, and then set the weights to 1 or 0
and then you have as would be expected from a robot
a movement that behaves in a mechanical way instead of an
organic way
hope it helps
check the file
if you need a maya 4.5 or 4 version of the file
just email me at
eljofa@yahoo.com
enjoy

Well provided thatt he robot mesh in is a few peices its way faster and easier to just parent the geometry underneath the bones, faster to rig, faster to animate. you just have to be carful about the pivot points of some of the geometry thats all.
