I did those models a while ago... And i wanted to test out Brazil... this is the result ! A quick scene, no light (just the skylight from Brazil)
I'm looking for any suggestions/idea on how to improve any aspect of the scene... form lighting to composition to modelling .. bring it on.
Things I would like to do:
-some DOF effect
-a carpet style ground... especilaly looking for comment on this.. I have no idea how to approach this...
- a background environement
I'm adding details as we speak, but the scene take awfully long to render, 135000 faces=> 4 hours render, I'm learning to tweak brazil at the same time.

either Brazil is crappy or you're using a 3000*3000 pixel .PSD file as a texture on every object in the scene and using full bump. spec. and environment mapping with volumetric lights, because there's no reason that such a simple scene should take 4 hours to render. Cool Lego men though.

I like it! Since they are plastic, you may want to add a traditional light to the scene for some specular highlights. Can you post your render settings for brazil? How many bounces, etc..

I love this scene! I wonder, would a full animation of these lego men come into copyright conflict with the lego company?
What I'd love to see is a full out medieval style battle with these dudes against some opponent for which they are in preparation.

my niece and nephew would love this. Actually I like it too :) good job, although I think it would be more fun if the scene was more complex.

I agree that it should be chaotically complex, so it's just like sensory assault of things happening all at once. I guess you have to solve that render problem before that'll be reality huh?
But seriously this scene is also begging for animation...
Anybody know about the copyright conflict of interest issue? Before jul654321 goes and spends a few months animating this thing? If it's legal you could probably make a career out of entertaining people with these lego animations.
First I gotta say that this is really wonderful stuff, I love legos and still have a large castle set up with attackers and defernders...
Anyway I have a couple of crits:
The heads look a little squshed, like they are not tall enough.
The nobs on the bricks look a little short (I actually played with making a full battle scene out of legos but my computer is WAY too slow for what I was trying for).
Again great job on the scene it has the right plastic feel and the colors are spot on.
As far as copywrite goes I'm not 100% sure but I think if you are going to sell it as long as you don't bill it as being "lego" (i.e. putting the logo on the bricks), don't use the actual screens from the characters (shields, bodies, flags, etc...), you should be fine.
cool scene..I love 3D lego.
I don't know why it takes you 4 hours to render...
I did a lego scene to and rendered with brazil and it was done in 5 minutes.

Don't forget the word "lego" is on the top of the round parts on the tops of the bricks. :D :D :D

Thanks for all the usefull (and nice :) ) comments !!!
-About the render time... I think I went a little overboard with brazil options... especially the samples View rate.
I also found that the Max Light Tracer is not that bad... and a hell of a lot faster.
-About the scene.. I'm doing new bricks and some accessories right now, and I will make a new scene with more details.
Does anyone have any suggestion for the carpet ground ?
-Animation:.. well right now, I'm looking for a still scene, but when I did the bricks and the character, I did a small test: (~1Mo)

-Copyright, I know Lego are pretty agressive about their name being used, so I'm not taking any chances... And since I dont intent anything profewssional with it, it should be fine...
EF_studios: nice army :)
Again thanks for the comments, and I will keep posting progress in here...

beautiful and practically photorealistic (I don't know why I say practically) A backdrop/ground will add a great amount of realism to the piece.
As for a suggestion for a carpet... I don't know about you, but I always had an extremley hard time making lego people stand up on carpets, with that in mind I would recommend that the ground for the battle scene be wood (like a table) or one of those large, thin, flat lego bricks (usually green) that were made for grounds
such as the floor brick in this (http://zachery.path.med.umich.edu/lego/ray/first_floor.gif) picture --- I DID NOT MAKE THIS, ONLY FOUND WITH GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH--
Hope this helps :)

You know what crosses my mind? That "Big Battle" scene from LotR - The 2 Towers.

The lego men actually look like lego men. I've seen so many 3d lego men, that look nothing like the real things, so points for your accuracy.
Post your Brazil settings and I'll help you out with them. Chances are you can get the same looking render in a lot less time. Of course, that also depends on what kind of a computer you're using.

tee hee. i love lego.. i would have personally liked to see more variation in the kinds of blocks. but I like it alot.. maybe raise the glossiness on the blocks to give that sharp specular lego has.

Little update...
A new scene with a LOT more blocks (and more different too).... I used reactor to drop the blocks randomly and so they make a nice pile... almost no touch up..
I also did some accesories for the lego mens

The GI in this one is from MAX... I think part of my Brazil problem is that I'm using the Brazil demo/Beta from a while ago, retail is probably faster...so I think I'll stay with max for this one, and learn to set it up properly...
No GI on this one, just a quick render (400000 faces so far)

Thanks for all comments/ crits, don't stop !!! :)

Wow, that's soo much rotation and movement of all those pieces. I'll give you props just for that :) This looks good, it reminds me of back in the day of playing with my legos and using my video camera to make a movie.. now it can be done without hands appearing every few seconds ;)
I have no critiques at this point other than trying to get that GI working. :)

This is great!
Love lego models me!
I think putting your job on carpet would look great. Would re-affirm the scale of it all.
Heres one i did a while back - not finished the bloke yet. - but it is sat on carpet.
