View Full Version : A way to select edges in CE 6?
Gendou 10-19-2003, 10:01 PM hi, i've used the v8 of Cinema4D for a little while, (transitioning from a 3dsmax background) and i just picked up the CE edition. the one thing i'd like to know is if there's a way to select edges like in v8? i know it wasn't implemented until v8 i believe, but i was wondering if there was a plugin or something that would allow edge selection.
thank you,
G

Select 2 points: you got an edge.

heh heh, thanks :)
i had assumed that, i was just wondering if there was a direct edge selection mode.
ps - i also checked out the upgrade path on maxon's site, and i went as far as the screen to put my credit card number in, and apparently you can upgrade from CE to v8 w/ the advanced renderer for about 500$ USD. i think so anyway. if not, i must have read something wrong.
thx

Selecting 2 adjacent points isn't selecting an edge....
In short, you can't select edges in v6 or v7. That feature was added in v8.

As far as I know, Maxon also has sidegrades, and even Photoshop etc users with a licence can benefit from competitive prices.
Arndt's edge extrude works from vs7 if I'm right, as does Supernurbs that offered weighting before 8 was around...

Why not? Lightwave doesn't even have edges support and it goes okay. I've heard Clay has just points. You select 2 points: you get an edge. You select 3+ points: you get a face.

Get a hold of these plugins:
Select Plus
http://homepage2.nifty.com/aquawave/e/cafeteria/selectplus.html
Edge Extrude, Edge Bevel and Cutter
http://www.vonkoenigsmarck.de/Seiten/StartD.html
These are great plugins and make working with C4D R6 much
easier.

I believe the upgrade from the free version (CE) that comes with magazines costs more than a original purchased copy of Cinema 4D 6(XL, ART).
also theres no where on the site that I can see that offers an upgrade from CE, only from ART
UPGRADES FROM ART R6 and R7
to CINEMA 4D R8 + Advanced Render PC $495
to CINEMA 4D R8 + Advanced Render Mac $495
I was in the same boat as you when 3D world gave away 6.3 CE. I nearly went for the upgrade too.

yes, it seemed as though it were upgradeable to 8, but i'm not sure what the 'ART' version is. i am thinking that i'm going to stay off the upgrade until i have more work down with c4d to justify it. then i'll most likely just buy the base package of Cinema's current version. i was interested in the one upgrade path because of the advanced render module. i can wait and buy the others individually.
in all honesty, i'm happy to own a piece of decent 3d software, even if it came from the cover of a magazine. i've been learning from software from other avenues and i would still be in the dark about 3d and even most computer graphics if not for it.
i think that these apps offered on the covers of terrific magazines like computer arts, 3d world and digit give an opportunity to learn to many people who aspire to get into this sort of thing and either can't afford the software or schooling.
i know there are demos, but 30 days or a save-disabled version aren't adequate to someone who's trying to learn and doesn't have any other options but to learn on their own. demos are geared toward people who are already using a version and want to check out new features.
it's taken me a few years now to get a grip of 3d and i'm still a noob compare to most who frequent these boards. if there were learning editions and free versions earlier on, i may have had a different method of learning. also, bookstores getting these UK creative arts magazines wasn't common until maybe 2 years ago also, so the resources aren't available to learn.
Maxon will be offering an upgrade path from CE+ but they haven't said when - Baz

$500 to go from CE to R8+AR sounds about right.
Remember if you have max, you can sidegrade to a more powerful version of R8 for not much more.
