View Full Version : Environment: Dive Room
charlie.howell 10-19-2003, 08:47 PM I just finished a year at Vancouver Film School. I'm looking to get into a game studio.
This is the set I created for my modeling reel. What you think of it? Is it good enough to get a job, or do I need more practice first?
Created with Softimage XSI and Photoshop

Seems like I already had an account. Anyway, great stuff, showing off rendering skills with your FOV and texturing abilities. It's always good to show the UV maps, so bring em out.

that first picture looks real to me. I thought it was a picture of a movie set or something.

awesome job dude, i'd hire you :) but the water appears somewhat like jello cause it lacks any bump. i understand the situation of the water, but i just think it needs something
nick: reminds me of deep blue sea too
still, awesome work!! 5 stars

Wish I had a dive room like that, wouldn't go diving then but just walk around it and make some pictures of it and the gelly water:thumbsup:

It would be interesting if you created the focal light underneath the water for one render, rather than the large ceiling light. It would do wonders for the room, and I'm sure something interesting would come of it.

I see that you state you just finished a year at the Vancouver Film School. I am currently at the Art Institute of Dallas (Texas). I am going to be graduating This December after a year at the program there. I already have a batchelors degree in Architecture from Texas A&M University, and am using that towards modeling environments.
My question is, what degree is offered from the Vancouver Film School? What level of experience did you have with Softimage before you started? I assume that you are an environment modeler, how many models are you required to have for your final tape?
I ask this because I am very much impressed by the quality of your work. I have also seen the work of a charachter animator from your school by the name of Brian Sum, and his reel was very impressive. The program up there seems to be of a pretty high caliber. I would love to know more about it.
Thanks.

Lookin' damn sweet my friend!! Can't wait to see more from you. All you need is a giant robot and the room would be complete!
Cheers!

Thanks for all the feedback and compliments, it is appreciated.

Vancouver Film School is an "immersive" program. Basically its like three years in one - working long hours for 6 to 7 days a week. All you get is a secondary education certificate. Its not much but the experience and knowledge you leave with completely makes up for it (I hope). When I got here a year ago I knew nothing about Softimage XSI, and after a couple weeks we were modeling creatures and animating spaceships. VFS has three streams or areas of focus - Visual-FX, Animation, and Modeling. Half way through the program each student picks a stream and creates a demo reel base on that stream. I went into the modeling stream and was required to create two characters, an environment, and a hard body (car, plane, tank, etc). Basically, VFS is like a boot camp for the CG industry. I'm sure there is a better description of the program on the vfs website (http://www.vfs.com), but hopefully that gives you an idea of what its like from a students perspective. Overall - a great year!

Feels like " Sphere ", makes me feel like I'm reading the book again :D... and again and again...
Love it, would love a camera fly trough with a lil bit more light so we can see the details. And I think that a wire frame would be very very nice to see :D
For crits :
I think the main walkplatform is a lil bit to dark for working conditions
And the light on the ceiling is a bit to much, I would tone it down a lil bit
a lil bit to much reflection on the wall behind the support beams, maybe fade them would make it less busy and lighten up the things that are hanging above the diving hole, because I can only guesse what they are because it's much to dark and therefore much too chaotic for my feeling
Ps. I'm dutch so don't mind the typo's and keep up the good work ;)

:wavey: This looks incredible! Awesome render and even better lighting! I think the reflection of the suits on the glass tubes is odd, but that is probably because I don't know how to do that correctly :D

Fantastic work man. It looks almost photoreal. Infact I think that sort of stuff is more suited to a reel aimed at film or TV rather than games, although I'm sure you'll have little trouble being employed by either. Good luck!

This is an amazing image.
You should have no problem getting a job with work like this.
Maybe want to tone down the caustics on the ceiling.
Other than that it looks great.
