Since AutoDesk is giving 3-year licenses (http://students.autodesk.com/?nd=home) of it's products to students I thought about trying them out.
I have a couple of basic questions since I come from Blender and use that for both modeling and animating.

When it comes to animating do most people just animate in Max/Maya or go over to MotionBuilder?

Does MotionBuilder allow you to create rigs in it or do they need to be imported?

Finally, does MotionBuilder do the rendering or do you animate in it and then export back to Max/Maya for rendering?

Thanks for any guidance.

1.It comes down to the studio. I come from games and there MB is used quite a lot since you deal with some mocap and i think thats easier in motionbuilder than in Maya. But in movies it seems to be mostly Maya for animation. Of course we did use Maya quite some too depending on the project.

2.Mobu has FBIK rig (you can find it in Maya as well, not sure if Max has it yet..) and that's the only rig you need. All you have to do is to set up the bones in max/maya then export the skinned mesh and characterize it to get the rig right away in MB (goes really quick to set up.)

3.Mobu does not have any fancy render tools, all rendering should be done in another application. :)
