Title: Farming Unit 2
Name: G G
Country: United Kingdom
Software: Photoshop
"Farming Unit" is one of my earlier concepts that even after quite a long time I still like,
yet its starting to feel a little old now so I thought I'd revisit it.
I Hope you like! your comments and critiques are always appreciated! ^^

This is really cool! The sense of scale is really great, I love it when people paint stuff on such an enormous scale. My favourite part of the image is definitely the structure on the left though, it looks like something from the Halo universe, and I really love all the layers of structure within it. It almost reminds me a little of a Dune worm. Your brushes are really interesting too, the overall effect reminds me of painting with a sponge on paper. It's really unusual, and that wins you bonus points.

Great painting. The sense of scale and color palette is brilliant.

I really dig this. The first thing that came to mind when I saw the image, was Rendezvous with Rama (Which I am a huge fan of). It's that feeling of a world existing inside a giant room/ship. Even those vehicles are vaguely reminiscent of the beetle-like biots that maintain the grass fields in the Rama ship. :D

Lovely piece, the execution of the indoor farming idea is perfect, and the palette and composition are great.
I'm taken out of it a little bit by the bottom right insert. Compositionally I think it works great and gets you a nice symmetry with the top left, but the near-stencil quality of it when the rest of the piece is so well fleshed out clashes a bit, would have liked some texture or even a little bit of volume or off scene light coming into that black.

Really nice concept, again to backup what others have said, the sense of scale really makes this piece work. The lighting and contrast between the fields and super structure work really well too.
One minor critique, the interior of the orb structure felt a little off with perspective when compared to the rest of the scene. I feel like the interior lit element should be more to screen left and slightly concealed behind the left wall of the entry. That said i have no idea what this is, so it may be exactly as you intended :)
Nice work!
Dave.

This vast interior space is quite spectacular! I like the sense of scale as you put those human characters in the front lines, not to mention the harvesters... Also exciting how you mixing the retro-type sci-fi design with that spherical form - the latter is quite typical in shaping in this era of 2K, in my opinion. But here, they're living well together. And there is a pinch of fantasy mood in it if i'm watching the left parts right next to that orb - meaning those pin like structures, and the grayish colors. Interesting...
After checked the earlier work (didn't know that); I think there is a undeniable progress in concept in compare of your earlier farming unit. This is more clear-out, and scaled up, too. The former concept has more organic elements in shape of structures, what somehow reminds me a cool mixture of Cameron's Aliens and the later Dune Harkonnen designs... more darker in moods. Don't ask why...
Obviously your painting skills improved since then. :D
Long and short of it, this is a great-, inspiring work!! FP is well deserved, imho. I would really love to see more of this world, from other viewpoints or other aspects...
So, keep it up!

Really cool! Love the sci fi take on farming. I heard city farming / gardening is becoming the next big thing, so extra nice to see something like this. :) Cool brushwork too.

cgCody: thank you I wasn't familiar with the book I'll have to check it out!
I suppose it’s a similar idea, I thought about the farming unit as the life support area of a complex base built in a barren planet that humans were colonizing and terraforming.
ThE_JacO: thank you and thanks for pointing that out, it is indeed there for that extra storytelling (I thought about two mechanics in love skipping work to go sit in a quiet place) and for composition in fact I think it's still a little too heavy on the left. Probably adding a bit of light there as you suggest would balance it better and clarify the story, I often tend to just silhouette the extreme foreground to increase the sense of space.
Everlite: thank you I see what you mean with the perspective, after I fogged the area out it got a bit lost and it’s hard to see but the lit element actually comes out and forward a bit I think that’s why it’s giving that impression.
Zocsi: thank you! glad you checked the older one :D as I as was saying in the first post the concept is quite old, I can see plenty of faults and shortcomings and was tempted to remove it from the portfolio as it’s not very representative anymore..but I still liked the concept so I thought I’d upgrade it instead.
I definitely plan to continue developing the story and show other areas of the base, characters, vehicles etc!
Victorior: cheers and cheers to you! :D

One of my favourite environmental pieces I have seen since last week ;) hahaha. Terrific setup. a field of harvesting crops and machinery with beautiful natural light-sourcing. Leigh mentions Halo, I'd like to add the colour combinations remind me somewhat of Metroid Prime on Game-Cube.
Great effort, very inspiring.

This image has wonderful charm. I feel I could lay down in the prairie, only hearing the distant mumble of some agricultural machinery. It exhales an impressive feeling of quietness. Many thanks !
Though if it is supposed to be underground (I think it is), maybe a little bit more contrast would be welcome. I don't know what emits the light, whether it is the sunlight passing through holes in the ground or a glass canopy, or a completely artificial light designed to mimic the sun rays, but in all cases, I think the shadows should be a little stronger.
Of course if you consider this piece finished (and it is surely awesome as it is), don't bother ! ;)

Oh yeah? *Cracks fingers* :wip:
It's future fiction but not science fiction. If there was science to it, the greenery would be layered and lit artificially with red-blue diode lights, making the leaves appear black. Even if natural sunlight is available, solar panels are so much more efficient than electrolysis that if you have any need to save space and energy it pays to split up the light spectrum.
This is why you shouldn't let fact get in the way of fiction. :D
It is however beautiful art with a wonderful sense of openness and space. My only wish is that we'd see more of it, more details. :)
