View Full Version : animate a heavy chain
zedsdead 10-19-2003, 12:04 AM hi guys, i want to animate a heavy chain falling from the sky onto a table then cracking it. the craxk will probably be done in post, i think, but i was just wondering how i should animate this chain...
on one end it will have a lock, so i guess that side will hit the table first......should i uise bones w/splines or what? i want the chain links to have a little jiggle too....kind of random....
thanks in advance.....

thanks, so would i make a bone for each link in the chain, and then just rigid bind...? im not really an animator, but im just doing some projects on my own to get more experience under my belt...
thanks,

No, not rigid bind - rigid bodies. Under the dynamics menu set:
select object (link 1)
soft/rigid bodies>create active rigid body
repeat those for each link
then select all links
fields>gravity
this should get you a chain falling and colliding with itself. To do the table cracking:
select table top
effects>create shatter[] surface shatter with extrude on
then make all the shards of the table into active bodies as well.
select shards and gravity field
fields>affect selected objects
that'll make the table fall apart right away, you'll have to key the visibilty of the unshattered table and the shattered table, and the effect of gravity on the shards(use the active attribute in the rigid body attr editor)
the last step, as with all dynamic simulations, is hours upon hours upon hours of tweaking to clean up interpenetration errors.

Save some time on chain setup and try this script on highEnd3D
createDynChain.mel v0.4
