Hi,
Ive started a tutorial on making a car using nurbs, in this case, mercedes sl 500. THe site is not done yet, but will hopefully be done soon. My point is that i dunno much about writing tutorials, and i just wanted to share what i know about nurbs, so others can benefit from my knowledge. Tell me what should or shouldnt be done to make it a real good tutorial? My goal is to make a tut that everybody, even beginners, can make a car with nurbs only. Please let me know ur suggestions and opinions, because it all depends on you, as a user, how the tutorial will come out. Ill treat every suggestion and every thought with respect.
THe reason why i started this site is because this is my first nurbs car in maya, and i spent too much time on it to only have it for fun, and it came out pretty decent, so i figured i could spend more time writing a tut on it.
Here is the site:

http://www.vertexstudios.net/tutorialsite/initial.html

Requires flash.!

Tell me what i should do to make it rock.

i dunno...
I mean the flash looks great,i love the way it looks but what about the band width?
I mean shouldnt you be useing html...?

Plus the extra band width you could use instead to make bigger images...
im running 1600x1200 and the images look about 500x340 or something..

looks great though just needs to be bigger i think

Many people use 1280x1024, thats what i use too. And if i increase the size of the images, ill have to deal with excessive file size and other stuff, like redoing the whole section of the car just to take bigger shots, heh.
Any better suggestions about how the site should come out??

I might've missed it cause I'm a blind old fart, but if you had the reference material there for people to download that'd be awesome. Specifically the image planes you used. Would help us to get into it right away. ;)

The orange/yellow flashing loading sign is a bit epileptic but... haha, that's just my opinion. :D

The whole site looks REALLY nice btw. Still, it's not the look of the site makes a good tutorial, so don't concern yourself too much with the layout or the look, except to make the tutorial extremely linear and straight forward. Number the steps if you can.

I don't know about anyone else, but before I even start a tutorial I normally skip to the last page of the tutorial to see what we'll come out with. If it makes me excited, I stick with it the whole way. Knowing that I'll end up with something that looks REALLY cool is enough to get me into it. :)

Hope that helps!

a good tutorial need not have fancy flash animation or good looking wallpaper on the page, take a look at dave's tut on poly modeling, one of the best outhere www.thehobbitguy.com
i think you are on the right track, but keep it simple, people will not want to wait for a page to load everytime they need to go back and forth through the course of the tut, and i'm sure it will be a long tutorial for that matter.
focus on instructions and have clear pictures to go along with the steps.that is what makes a good tut. but it seems u r on the right track, keep it up. this will help a lot of NooBs out there (including me):buttrock:
good luck:thumbsup:

thanks ya'll. I decided to go with flash because its more fun to learn and enjoy it. Ill numer the steps, sure. And you said people will have to wait going back and forth? No, once youve visited all the pages , you dont have to wait again, they are saved at your HD. And isnt that better to just wait for 7 sec(cable), or 1 min(dial up), and then you dont have to watch each image load. Ill make it as detailed as possible, you people motivated me here, keep posting. Anything about the text appearance? Is it big enough? clear enough? Ill put the start file wiht the blueprints available for download, good idea.

Is there a way i could record me makin stuff ? No cameras!!
Is there a program that takes screen shots of everything you do? PLease let me know.

Try Camtasia from Techsmith, I think it does what you need in terms of capturing your screen/Window or predefine area of the screen. In 15 fps it does capture in real time.

Looking forward to this tutorial - just curious - how are you getting the headlight holes? are you boolean subtracting the nurbs?

yea, it looks nice but the navigation is to much of a pain to get around.... for a tutorial section anyways.

solomon, im working fulltime on this tutorial, and ill have files available for download such as startfile(full blueprint setup, incl. blueprints already cropped), the whole body of the car (without interior, wheels, and other details), and probably something else. THe reason why im doin this is because im tired of going through every single detail of the car again, i figured that ill just explain how nurbs work, and teach how to use birail and fillet, you know. You can download a start file, and have no headache from settin up the blueprints yourself, and then, if you cant get the car shape right, no need to quit the tut, youll be given a help file, heh. After that you know, ill try to write more about rendering/texturing, but i dunno much about rendering myself, so im learning too. Stay tuned for a newer version of the site.

Streamlight, whats wrong with the navigation? is it too small? or what? please be specific, or i wont be able to fix the problem.

That should be a great tut vertexstudio, and I am looking
forward to see it when done. But one thing , the letters are too
small, I can hardly read them. I am sure you will change the final format to HTML or pdf so people can use it easily and with larger fonts.
thanks.

Bob27.
I dindt plan to change it to html man, thats a flash site, and everyone can use it if you download a flash plugin which takes about 10 sec to install+dl. Ill fix the text, thats for sure, i think its way too small for a tutorial. Ill probably make 2 versions of the site, HTML/FLASH. The reason why i chose flash cuz i wanted it to be more interactive rather than a dull, boring html based site. With flash, i can do whatever i have in mind. SURe, ill make 2 versions!, no problem.
Ill upload a newer stuff in a few hours i think, so you may want to check it out periodically.

Just make it simple, original technique, fast, short, but understandable (especially for newbies), just keep up your good work...:)

Here is the newest version of the site. Obviously its missing a lot of stuff, but now you can see how things will work. I had to fix the text as many people were telling me it was too small. What about now?
Ill make a short movie clip, like a 360 spin of the car with all HDRI reflections. Takes about 1 hour to render 40 frames with mental ray, heh. But when you see it, you understand that its worth it. The wheel rim was made to show the result one may get if following my directions. THe tire will be rendered as well, but separate. The navingation bar labels are temporary, as i dunno if ill be going through the middle part and the details. I think people can figure out how to make the details.

Feel free to post your opinion, cuz i value that. As you can see, all the changes are based on people's suggestions. Be a part of this site.

BTW. only "introduction and front" have been updated.

Here are the latest rendered images of the car.

Some renderings are better than other ones, so i just save whatever i find well rendered.

put it on a white background, hard to see anything... nd makes it seem like you want to hide something

TheShaddix

Put what on a white bg? I dont get it man. THe text? or the whole site ?
Anyway, im finishing up the wheels section; i made it as detaled as it could ever be, i think i ccould even separate teh wheels page from the whole tut and make a different tutorial, heh, just a thought.

The wheels section is ready!
A complete detailed tutorial on how to make a complete wheel for mercedes (or any other car) is right here. WHEELS Lesson.

Now, the tutorial is close to be done.

vertexstudio, thanks for your tut. It looks great, You have made that not for yourself but for others to read and learn from it , right? OK , I opened your wheel tut page but could not save the page. How can I save it, dear? Otherwise , I can't use it. You know you can't stay online and read a tut, you 've got to save it !

3DKnight means put your car on a white bg so that it can be seen better.

Bob, im not sure u can save flash pages, but you sure can take screen shots hah (print screen).
Take screenshots of the pages u need, and thats it.
By the way, i didnt think of that; i thought everyone had a constant connection.

well, my opinion is that the web site is really cool. the colors are just great. but the tutorial could be even better. u should somehow group the pictures that belong to each step of modeling, maybe even mark them with numbers. maybe the text should be below a picture so u could give us a more detailed explanation for each step. all in all it's a great tutorial and thank you for that
