right-click on the name of your view eg: persp, front, top....then select "configure" at the bottom of the menu.
In the "Rendering Method" tab, there will be a tick next to "Use selection brackets" untick it to get rid of the stupid boxes.

Or just blink at every key frame during playback. Takes good timing but you can get it. ;)

actually, they're called Selection Brackets.
And, just like almost everybody else, I hate em, so I asigned a keyshort to toggle them, cuase somehow, max thinks it's funny to make em appear again every now & again.
go to customise-> customise User Iinterface
there, press the keyboard tab. scroll down to Show Selection bracket toggle. assign a key to it, save your change [bottemright corner] and your homefree
