Hi Guys,

I’ve been following this forum for a while now with a view to building a new workstation ( my first build ) and was hoping you guys could cast an eye over my proposed spec to make sure that all components are compatible and most appropriate for my needs.

General Usage
I’m a freelance designer working in a mix of 2D and 3D graphics utilizing 3DS Max and mental ray. 3D wise I produce mainly still renders of products and interiors. I deal with some quite large 2D graphics and am looking at moving more into architectural visualization also will be using some larger data sets in the future.

I will be looking at investing in V-Ray 2.0 in the near future.

Overview of Spec

CASE: Coolermaster Cosmos RC-1000 Full Tower Case

POWER SUPPLY: Coolermaster GX 750W PSU
Is this an adequate power supply?

MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

PROCESSOR: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz Socket 1366 8MB

GRAPHICS CARD: Gigabyte GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 Dual DVI Mini HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card
I’ve read allot here about the issues with the new Nvidia cards and to be honest I’m unsure what to think, I plan to make use of V-rays GPU rendering capabilties. Essentially I’m just looking for significant improvements over my current card a Nvidia Quadro FX 370.

MEMORY: 6 x Corsair Corsair 4GB DDR3 1600mhz Vengeance Memory Module CL9 1.5V Non-ECC Unbuffered (24GB Total)
Will I see significant performance improvements in going from 1333mhz to 1600mhz?

SYSTEM DRIVE: Hitachi 1TB Deskstar 3.5" Hard Drive - SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cach

MEDIA DRIVE: Hitachi 1TB Deskstar 3.5" Hard Drive - SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cach
I may consider running 3 Drives with the media drive being mirrored in case of drive failure, would I need an additional raid controller for this?

COOLING: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 Socket 775, 1156, 1155, 1366, AM2, AM3 Heatpipe CPU Cooler
Will this be suffucient?

ADDITIONAL: DVD RW + CARD READER

OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 7 Professional

I would really appreciate it if anyone can provide any feedback on this build and also offer any advice on important things to consider during the build.

Many Thanks

Dave

Here is my feedback.

1. For a processor, I rather sacrifice everything else for an Intel i7 Extreme, because rendering is mostly about the speed of a CPU. You can't put a 24G RAM into full use without it. I strongly suggest this. If you want to reduce the budget, 12RAM and i7 E will be faster than this.

2. I would go for cooler master haf 932 full tower, it has better fans.

3. Here is a page on PC power supply: http://compreviews.about.com/od/cases/bb/PSU.htm

4. The cooling system is good. Ironically, I find some 2.99 cooling systems work as good as the expensive ones.

Thanks for taking the time to respond syn-cgs.

In response to your points.

1. Although I understand that i7 E will make the system significantly quicker, Loosing 12GB of ram saves me £150 quid and the I7E will cost me an additional £591 making my build £445 more exspensive in total.

2. May be being a bit shallow here, but that case is U-GLY do you have any other recomendations ?

3. Thanks for this i'll give it a read.

1. Looks like you took a lot of time and effort on building a good PC, and I see your point. But I am wondering if you need this workstation now or later on, because Intel normally releases it new products in April, so faster CPU will be out in 3 month.

2. LOL, so my turbo hunk is not sexy enough for ya?

3. np

1. Herm, i could wait but ideally i want to put the expenditure into this tax year, which finishes in april, I will look inot it

2 - No offence, hoarse for course and all that, im going to look at the Coolermaster Cosmos S Black Aluminium Case as it has imporved cooling.

thanks for your help.

Anyone else have an idea about waiting until april?

I've taken some advice from a few places and revised my spec a little, let me know what you guys think.

I hear that the 2000 series processors will be back on the market late this month so if they are released before i purchase this system I may revise my spec again

Overview of Spec

CASE: Coolermaster Cosmos S Black Aluminium Case
Revised from Cosmos due to better cooling desing

POWER SUPPLY: Antec TruePower New 650W Modular PSU

Revised due to advice and reduction in power to 650W
MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
I'm not sure about this, reviews arnt great does anyone have an opinion?
May be revised for the 2000 series chips.

PROCESSOR: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz Socket 1366 8MB
May be revised for the 2000 series chips.

GRAPHICS CARD: Gigabyte GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 Dual DVI Mini HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card

MEMORY: 6x G-Skill 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Ripjaws Memory Module CL9(9-9-9-24) 1.5V
Revised from 1600mhz for cost saving

SYSTEM DRIVE: Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard

MEDIA DRIVE: Hitachi 1TB Deskstar 3.5" Hard Drive - SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cach

COOLING: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus Socket 775,
Will this be suffucient?

ADDITIONAL: DVD RW + CARD READER

OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 7 Professional

Let me know what you guys think.

Many thanks

Dave

Your avatar says "US Minor Outlying Islands," if that is still accurate, anything you plan to deduct for the 2010 tax year had to be purchased by Dec 31, 2010 when filing in the USA.

Overall it looks like a good spec, the only hesitation is that LGA 1366 is officially and the end of the line. Unfortunately, it's direct replacement LGA 2011 won't be out for a few months.

If I had to buy right now I'd probably look at Sandy Bridge, if I had a few months I'd wait for LGA 2011.

thanks imashination glad to hear its working well for you!

dmeyer Im Uk based not sure why it says that.

So sandy bridge, there on hold at the moment arnt they until the end of the month?

If they come out in time i'll probably opt for those, what will the code be for the motherboard?

thanks for your help

I have been looking at your build for some time now. I wanted to get sandy bridge, but from what I have read they wont be available until early to late April. Not sure if I want to wait that long or just get a 950. I don't think I will wait though as that is two months of not being able to work on decent sized scenes.
