Hi there!!!

Well I finally got a good idea for the 3d challenge this month, I was not planning on entering the 3d challenge anymore but something strook me!!!
Okay my idea is a mechanical forrest... yep, a totally mechanical forrest with metal trees and robot creatures...

The story is that man has used up most of the forrest's in the world and was on the edge of extinction. Then just in time the technology for creating artificial life was found and man begun a big operation to create artificial life that could support the fallen ecosystem. Soon there were large forrest of ever expanding mechanical trees and creatures. Lifeforms as animals were created artifically and began their new domination of the world. Mechanical creatures were breading fast and soon biological life was threatened. The humans and the rest of the biological world had to fight for their lives or find way of living in harmony...

Generations have passed after the beginning of the mechanical era and now man has found it self evolved into strange creatures... The mechanical forrest and life kept on going.....

okay so it will be a scene from that world....
Here's a small pic of what I had in mind!

Really awesome idea for your piece!
Are those going to be solar panels on the trees? Kind of like they still use the energy of the sun type of thing?

great tree> good design> good concept idea

can we have a close up of just one of the trees and with a little bit of a lighting setup (so the gi doesn't blend the detail completely out)

great qoute on your page

I don't know who that is who wrote it (I'm not much of a reader) but it is very new NIN ish.

Perfect for a animation site

He I really like your forest and the story around the forest but why don't you finish your 2D challenge first?:wavey:

Thank you all for your kind response!!!

ZrO-1 >> Thanx, well they use some kind of syntetic photosintectic (CO2 and water make oxigen and gluecose ) technology to create oxigen and power for the tree/plant... the Mechanical trees or plants do not live on electric but require the same as a normal tree or plant. So they use the energy for the sun but in anotherway.

Adam >> Well heres a more clearer view... And Thank your for visiting my web-site, the quote or peom (actually) is written by me... I see it as a compliment that you refer to NIN!

Iquiniz.X. >> Thank you, I will finish my 2d challenge entry soon but I was more in the mood for some 3D!

Okay... I think it has a Myst 2: riven feeling to it... I made it a very sunny forrest, I'll change more soon but for now this has to do!!

 Cool enviorement
I thought these mechanical planets would be smaller I didn't think that u 'll make them as a tree (may be if thet r scaled to smaller planets it would be better)
keep going good luck:buttrock:

oops my fault on not noticing the name of the writer and your name (ah one of the same) Anyway I really like the poem and your image is really coming along. I think some wires would make for a good root sytem for the trees. Mybe add some control panels and such to them. What do you think?

Nice. Kindof like an environmentalist's wet dream gone sour - the solar panels in an organic battle for sunlight!

Looking forward to this one - love the sketchy feel to the second piece.

hey sangotten, happy to see you join this challenge. The theme is pretty interesting, and so is your approach. I like the mecha-forest idea. Only thing I can say at this point [and prolly too early to say], wont there be a problem with having numerous mecha-trees that look identical? You said yourself that animals have reproduced themselves and mecha-life took a path of its own, wont it be nice to show different "mutations" to mecah-plants, as in having a great diversity in their design. That will definitely show that they grew on their own, and have a life of their own.

Very cool! I like the shape of the fins and the folding mechanism suggested..would be cool if they were all in different states of deployment, etc. angling to the sun as best they can..and as was mentioned some totally strange phases of development would be cool, like abandoned unrecycled parts or something.

Someone was doing a really badass mechanical tree in the WIP section, but I can't for the life of me remember who it was or remember the thread name..I should have saved it..

For the 'enchanted' angle maybe they're just so advanced now that clarke's "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" proves out here. Like at the end of AI.

Anyway, cool stuff, look forward to more

Wooo thanks everyone!!!

Okay, this is a small update with just one different tree, one of many actually it will become a forrest full with different and in other state of life trees!!!.... Thanks for all the suggestion... they really helped me and still will help me....

As for the lighting I'm really confused..... IS IT WORKING???

It works for me. I would add some really tall, thin elements so that it has more of a forest feeling, and this would also create more interesting light casts. Like vegetarian antennaes...

Looking really nice!

Yep yep another update.... djeeesss I'm working non-stop on this one...!!! Thanks -OZ- and dobbermunk, you gave me a good idea that I will work out...!!

Okay I'm not so pleased with the last update.... I neeed more variation and my PC can't take all the highpoly shit no more... aaargh!!!

Anyway here goes...:buttrock:

That last pic is really looking cool. I love the different tree types you have put into the scene. It ****s that it's bogging down you 'puter, how many polys is it?

Sangotten,

You've definately got some great stuff going on here. I love the attention to detail that you've put into the different types of trees. The shadows off the trees are great!! Looks like you've been staring at the blinking hand for awhile too:beer:

Keep workin' it!

Traiven3d
06-04-2002, 08:33 PM
Yeah, I have to agree with Batmanuel on this one, the greatest piece of eye candy is those wickedly intricate shadows. Love your designs man, keep it up.

Cheers:beer:

06-04-2002, 08:58 PM
Wow :buttrock:

Thanks guys, it's nice to see that so many respond!!!

ZrO-1... well about 286078 poly's.... I don't know if that is a lot but I'm using a pentium 733mhrtz procecor and 516MB ram memory....

Anyway here is another update... well not really an update but more some changing of the ground texture and a little sign that says no trespassing.... I'm going out now..PARTY!!!

Chiau!

hypercube
06-04-2002, 09:37 PM
Woohoo, looking damn nice..love the designs on the tree variants, and as was mentioned, the cool-ass complex shadows.

Hmm, a 733 with 512 isn't -that- incapable, even if showing its age..300k polys shouldn't be that bad, but that depends on what you're using, render options, etc. and some apps are horrible at polys and memory hogs. "a lot" now is like up in the millions, at which point you just have to do some tricks, break it into layers, or be patient and let it render while you go drink :D

party on..

dobermunk
06-04-2002, 09:57 PM
Damn! Looking great!

I don't like the sign in the front though. It sets everything to a scale that I find disappointing. Maybe if that were a billboard...

And the ground needs moss-like cyberchips ala the growing machine in Miller's "Ronin".
C'mon we can push this thing up to at least 3 billion polys easy ;-D

How about adding a soft fog or something that gives the image and the background some depth?

hmmmmmmm, nice trees sangotten!! I like the one with the many panels. You could do one like that or almost like that, that's HUGE and will stand over ALL of the rest. Talk about enchanting i say.

Plus the lighting...?
Oh, and a very important question!! Is this the camera position? Cos the lighting will be greatly defined by the camera position!! And as for the trees, i just thought of something. Is it going to be nearly as dense as now, or will the shadows end up overlapping each other? Cos that would look cool.

Oh, oh, and your tree trunks need to be defined, to show exactly what they are. Till now i only see them as "something connecting the leaves with the ground". They look far too smooth to be mecha, and then again far too simple to be orga.

lookin good!!!!
One comment: You should work on that ground texture more, it looks stressed........

kick ass:buttrock:

Crazy Design :surprised

Looks awesome... so... overstyled... surreal...
dont know - i LOVE it!

PS: Is there a way to buy one of those trees?
I think the "fat" blue one in the center of the picture
would fit perfect into my garden. :p :D

Sangotten
06-06-2002, 12:01 AM
OKay thanks everyone!!!

I'm now on a point that I want to do it all over... I guess I will do tomorrow. I've added some flowers and detailed the ground texture more...

I think I'm gonna make it all look a bit more real, I've now got the feeling that it is a scene from one of those BAD adventure made by a cheap ass studio wich had no imagination (a game like Schism...urghhh)...

Anyway, here's a quick update...!

:buttrock: Great going man.
Splendid how you do the leaves/sloar panels.
I know you are far from finished but some trees that lay broken on the ground because of some strom would be cool.

O diazgl had some good comets there work on it and I think you can get some awsome work going

O well you said your gonna start all over. well good luck:wip:

Im into the style your pushing on the colours. I think the ground could use some more detail not sure but somethink to brake up the mid section between the trees {if they are trees, my apologies if they are not} also one thing that i like is if you take your leaves that you got going and maybe intergrate them with a stainglass feel ,so that they are highly reflective. in that way you can add some sweet lighting through out . but i would start over but just push it to the next leave. good work hope to see you up it one.

Hey sangotten, nice original idea:thumbsup:
Looking good so far.
One thing though, the area is still a bit 'wide open' if you know what i mean. Maybe you could add something that would cover most of the forrest, and block out the light. This immediately popped into my mind:

http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_pictures/europe/germany/bayern/munich_olimpia.shtml

its the munich olympia stadium.

THANX FOR YOUR KIND RESPONSE!!! :buttrock:

Well okay here is update from the new lay-out... It's pritty much the same but lot's will be changed in perspective to the old ones...

I don't have much time to comment so I'll just say that I'm working on something to fill up de space between the trees...

I like the idea of trees with solarleaves....:applause:

Great pic till now and nothing to crit yet.
Waiting for the next update:drool:

By the way: I think there will be a river between the trees,.. right?
Because i would do this.

The plants on the ground dont look all that mecha, but then again, its almost impossible to make all mecha, and STILL show ALL. Btw, i know it's supposed to be all futuristic and all, but have you considered plants with joints or anything? It would be hard as not to spoil the feel of the scene though.

Oh, and cos i really like your way, i feel like i just gotta be completely honest with you(deep down i'm a nice guy, but i'm REALLY rough around the edges) i think you got too little content. You seem to be moving a little slow, whereas you got lots of stuff to do.
And i wanna repeat what I said before about the trees, same tree design, but with different panel arrangement, that would look more...."natural?"!

And another one. You got me REALLY confused about the size of everything!! The plants on the ground, are supposed to be leaf sized and trees, tree sized? Cos atm, something just looks huge.

06-12-2002, 04:22 PM
I REALLY LOVE THE CONCEPT!!!! (as well as that cool tree in the middle!)...

A few thoughts...
a cyber-creek would look really cool (not sure what it would be made of... )
something to tie the trees to the ground.... they look =kind'a floaty. Maybe if the ground was made of caked-mud...
if you want a touch of "realism", why not bre4ak a few 'solar leaves' from the trees? shatter a couple of them and have the pieces lie closeby.

... and it may just be me going crazy. but a Dali-style elephant would look great behind some of those trees.:hmm:

Looking forward to an update!

Okay it's time for another update...

It's nothing special this time but I've been playing with the scale and the lighting a bit so this must look a bit more convincing...! Anyway I'm going to add more stuff in the scene and try to make it more a darker scene, with more shadows!!!

here goes...

ZrO-1
06-19-2002, 01:18 AM
That looks great. I can't wait to see it if you say you still want to tweak the lighting. It should be really wild. Good work. I like it.

alaklij
06-19-2002, 01:20 AM
Sangotten,
There is a hazy (overexposed) overall look to your piece. Could you remove that so there would be greater tonal range and saturation of the shadows and panels. Just try it once, and if you don't like it then put it back the way it was.

diazgl
06-19-2002, 08:08 AM
yeap, the scale is better now!! Waiting to see the lighting man!!!
Oh, and btw, just thinking, aren't forests like less "bumpy"? as in the deformation of the ground is usually at large scale, cos most of the land has been smoothed away by rain? At least that's how most forests i've seen looked like.

ZrO-1
06-19-2002, 03:02 PM
Actually, in my area (northeast US) the forest ground can be very uneven. It really tends to vary.
The two extreems are:
1) very flat and open under the trees with the ground covered in pine needles 6 inches thick.
2) very rocky and hilly completely covered with 4 foot tall ferns that hide cracks and sink-holes deep enough for a person to fall into.

Sangotten
06-19-2002, 04:20 PM
Thanks everyone!!! You guys give me inspiration to go on!!!:buttrock:

...Okay just another update with most of the new features inside...the light still needs more attention because I was busy placing everything on the right spot (it's hard because I'm pushing my PC!!!).

I think an element reinforcing scale is missing, but otherwise - hot!

hey!! are the new plants mobile?!! Excellent dude, loving it!!

PS: if they ARE, show it a bit MORE...!

Sangotten
06-20-2002, 08:58 PM
...ThanX!!!

Well the plants are not moving... they are mushrooms that filter the ground and supply food for the living creatures...

The scale may have been changed or so it seems but you'll see when I put in my character that it will fit (I hope)

I started on the character because I'm to bored to work on the enviorment at this moment! He looks like one of those Post-apocalyptic humans but then with elf ears...
Thanks Kaos for the idea of a P.A. nomad and caravan... I think I'm going for that one!!!!

Thanks Diazgl!
Well the chin was a problem yes but I think it looks okay, just to show you here a side view (it's a gassmask so it can have weird shape...;) )... Ohhh and I really suck at modeling humans so this will be not that realistic:) .

diazgl
06-21-2002, 08:48 PM
looks good man, i forgot that the mask is giving out all the shape. How about exagerrating it then? AHA!! I got it!! Its the angle!!!
Uhm, try making your mask more spherical (not too much but a bit more!)
And you dont suck at modelling....i could say that i suck at modelling....but you can't do that, sorry!!

Great concept:wip: Glad you jumped in on this one. At first I was thinking the plants to the right needed overlap (too ordered in their position) but then I thought not thay would be more efficient plant mechs the way they are. Once again, the concept is cool.
