please someone answer my question:
is there a way to model in Max like in LW/Cinema 4d where you layout points and bridge or connect them to create a poly ?? or is the only poly modeling method to start with a box and subdivide and also start with a plane and extrude the edge ?? what method do most of you use ??
thanks !!

Have you tried spline modeling? It may be more of how you want to start, then just put a surface modifier on it and colaps it to an editable polly.

That's not what he's looking for coffeepenguin ;)
Sebek27: Max doesn't have a bridge tool at all afaik, so the answer's no.

Actually the answer is yes, though there is no bridge tool like C4D. Max has a 'create polygon' tool when in vertex subobject mode, so you connect the dots either clockwise or counterclockwise and it creates a poly when you get back to the one you started on. It's about the same amount of work as C4D for making one polygon, but less well suited for making a quick chain of polygons.

I find point by point modeling is utterly tedious and inefficient compared to many better poly modeling methods available in Max. I only use create polygon to fix small areas, and would never do a whole model that way like I used to with C4D. I'd rather box model or extrude edges like you mentioned.

Actually, you're all wrong...sorta...hehe.

Max out of the box does not support this, but CSPolyTools does have a feature where you can select a number of verts, and it will create a polygon out of them. The Meshtools "connect" function acts like a "bridge" in the nichemin sense, ie, it creates a contiguous polygonal structure between 2 faces. There are a number of freeware scripts that further extend Max's modeling toolbox, and I urge you to play with some of them before you make up your mind.

This is what he's looking for: http://www.bmc.med.utoronto.ca/C4D/Addingpoints.html

Is it possible in Max + free scripts?

i am just wondering if it is possible to layout points and convert them to a poly like in LW/C4D.. just trying to figure out the modeling tools for all three apps before I make my final decision..

Well, like I said, you can use Max (straight out of the box) to lay out points in an editable poly object, then use the create polygon tool to make a polygon out of any number of the points. The drawback is that you have to click on them in order in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction, so it is not as easy as C4D's bridge tool to do a strip of them. Rather than click-drag, click-drag for a quad in C4D, it's 4 clicks in Max for each quad. You'd hate to do a whole model that way, I think, when there are easier ways.

If you are looking for the EXACT implementation of 'Bridge' in Max, sorry. There may be a script that does it, I don't know.

One thing about editable poly's, one of the rules is that any edge can have either 1 or 2 triangles it is attached to. This means that you cannot have more than two polygons going from one edge.

Don't know how it is in C4D, just thought I'd mention it.

Yes, you can do that in Max, a little differently, but it's possible. Just go get CSpolytools(www.scriptspot.com). There is also a set of tools called Polymagnus that have alot of tools like what is being displayed in that link. It's pretty basic stuff, so you should'nt have much of a problem.

Also, in max, by holding the shift key and dragging in the viewport(having selected an edge), it creates a polygon out from that edge, but you don't have to create the points manually.
