Does anyone use pure reflection (i.e. specular highlight off)? it seems some renderers like Vray and Mental ray don't look too good like this, therefore don't suppose such behavior.

Sometimes I do in VRay. It works and looks fine as long as you don't use point light sources.

Don't you think something is wrong with it? With specular reflections look much brighter.

Can you show a rendering with what you mean?

Yeh, in Mental Ray I turn it off all the time, just removes the bright highlight when I don't want it, I don't really see what's wrong with it. It doesn't change the proper reflections at all for me.

This might have to do with energy conservation.

This is the compressed slides, I remember there is a more detailed course note but can't find it at this moment.

What materials are you using by the way? Blinns and phongs or render specific materials like mia_material_x? This will make a big difference on how the specular reflection is handled.

I see it's a problem with Vray, not Mental ray. With Vray if you make the surface more blurry with specular off, the reflection of the arealight fast becomes dim up to invisible. With Mental ray everything is fine.
