I have cinema 7xl and lw7.5. upgrades cost the same. I can only afford to upgrade 1, so which one has the easier animation setup. I am doing an animated sitcom. The actors will be inanimate objects like football, baseball, pencils, phones etc with 2 eyes, 2 legs, 2 arms etc. One or 2 human actors. Models are much like the incredibles. No muclses. real smooth. note I have no experience in rigging and animating models from scratch. i just need the most user friendly setup.

Lightwave has a script called ACS ( auto character setup)

that automates the rigging process
also you can export your rigs to motionbuilder Via LW's
FBX import/export and make use of motionbuilder
CA tools which frankly puts lightwaves native CA tools to shame.

check the LW forum here at Cg talk for more info:buttrock:

I would agree. as anobrin said, lightwave has more features in it when it comes to animation. I myself am by heart an animator, but for me, Cinema 4D is cheaper. being a 14 year old student, I can't afford Lightwave.

I'm still running the demo (unfortunately) but cinema 4d is great for me so far.

I may offend many fanatics when I say that lightwave has a better animation toolset then cinema 4d. but then again, it has sold more and thus more people have it, thus more money is being used in more newer things..

whatever...It's up to you.

The only reason why I would suggest the upgrade to LightWave 8 is that it's this exact area which you are interested in that is being overhauled for the next version. Apparently, NewTek has rewritten the whole IK system and have made rigging much easier and more powerful than ever before. I really love both Cinema4D and LightWave, so I hope you won't think that I'm trying to slam C4D by saying that. Of course, we are comparing a fully released product (C4D v8.2) and a yet-to-be-seen one (LW8), so it's kind of a tough call to make really. Perhaps you could download the demo of v8.2 and see if MOCCA works well for you.

Well, I like Cinema, but never used Lightwave (never looked friendly, if that makes any sense). The Bonderland suite of plugins at Idea-Graphics looks very promising and will definitely make rigging and animating much easier.

Or, you can wait for .fbx, which most Cinema people seem to be doing.
