Hello there,

I know there are a lot of threads about graphics card, but I didn't find the answers. I did the search, honestly, and would like to get your opinion.

I have a workstation - 6 core phenom II AMD, 8 gig memory and graphics on board - 760G chipset. My routine tasks include visualisation of the interior and exterior scenes in 3d max, plus sculpting in blender and mudbox. I'm very happy with the overall performance. But I'm not happy with the viewport performance in big scene (>3 mil polygons). So I'm thinking to invest some reasonable money to the video card. I consider to buy something from modern ATI Radeon gamer range with the 1 or 2 gig memory.

The question is - will it be different in terms of viewport performance if I make this upgrade? Is somebody have the similar experience? If there will be no much difference, what will be the best solution?

Thanks

Bullit

What is your current level of performance?

Yes, upgrading the graphics card will definitely make a difference in viewport performance. The graphics chipset that you have now is a lower end model from three generations ago that really isn't designed to do much computer graphics work (if any). That doesn't mean the chipset is old and crappy, that's just what they put on motherboards for onboard graphics because it gets the job done for most of the users out there. Just about anything on the market will perform better than what you have now. If you're looking for a new card, what is your budget?

Not sure what they run for on the other side of the pond but check out the Radeon 6850, they are about $170 here. A Radeon 5770 is another good bang for the buck option from the previous generation Radeon series.
