Hi guys. This is the post of a long time lurker, first time poster :) There's a few bits I'd like to natter on about but for those of you who just want to see the work just scroll down and ignore it ;)

First off I'm going to apologise in advance for not being a very active member, I'm currently working a stop-gap job that makes me do 10-13 hour shifts each day (minus weekends) which doesn't give me much interweb time. Usually just emails followed by sleep. So chances are I won't be speedy getting back to you, but I do appreciate any and all comments.

Thanks to this and other things that happened in 2010 I had practically no time for anything art related so I couldn't update my portfolio or improve my work. Now I'm going to MAKE time. And that is where this little challenge steps in. Quite frankly I want a job doing what I love and I can guess by the fact that I'm currently not doing this job that my portfolio isn't up to scratch. So, time for an overhaul! My aim for 2011 is to significantly improve the quality of my work and I'd really like help from you guys to achieve it.

My aim is to produce at least 1 piece of portfolio-worthy art at the end of each week and aiming for at least 1 image a day. Seeing as I'm already 2 weeks in it's time to get cracking. Here's where I am so far:

Portfolio and work starting point: http://coffeeshakes.daportfolio.com/ http://coffee-shakes.deviantart.com/

Week1
Getting back to basics and establishing a starting point with life drawing

Anyone who owns "Anatomy for the Artist" will probably recognise these guys. Also from: http://senshistock.deviantart.com/

Things I want to improve: Faces, hands, feet, line quality and getting more energy into the pics. Also the scanner ate some of the contrast on these :S

CnC welcome.

I am almost at your same point. I know "Anatomy for the artist" and it's a good reference, but for the last month I got some tips using "Human Anatomy" [published by ImagineFX] and in my opinion it's really helpful and well made. However, I have to improve much more for something really worthful, in particular my sketches seem always too comics rather than realistic. I'd like to share something, but actually I don't have neither a scanner nor a camera.

@ Avil. Oooh yeah I liked the anatomy Imagine FX issue too :D the only problem I had was it mostly looked at drawing formulae and not so much on how to go from life to the formula. Looking too much at the end result and not how you get there. That's actually one of the things I'm figuring out atm, making the connection between the info you get in the "how-to" book and drawing from life. Also get yourself a scanner! Art is meant to be viewed, I'd love to see some :D

And for general viewing here's an update for everyone.

Practicing those pesky hands:

Got some more things to share in a bit.

Ugh, It's been a very slow and very fustrating week especially art wise. As for work I fail to see why I need to fight each month to actually get paid for the work i've done!

Thinking about doing some pose maniacs stuff to try and loosen my sketches up, just a bit worried that the anatomy for those models can be a bit off sometimes..

Rant over here's the slim pickings for this week and some I've uncovered in places from the previous week, some are clickable as they're meatier than the others. I think although I could have done better I have 4 images I'm happy to upload to a portfolio. January overhaul was a good start :D

Any reccomendations? It's a dual screen normal/cintiq setup.

More when I actually get access to the scanner (probably going to be tomorrow at this rate)

EDIT: also while I'm thinking about it, anyone have any suggestions for next months challenge? I'm thinking about studies of old masters paintings and such to get to grips with various things. Like actually painting in photoshop XD

Got a few to upload today. Made a few of them small so they don't kill so many comps.

Been reading Bridgeman's complete guide to drawing.

More life drawring (if you can call drawing from photos life drawing..?) and some Bridgeman studies. Also been following the advice of Justin Gerard in ImagineFX. Because he's just plain awesome! http://www.justingerard.com/

I still think the original image just looks like the photographer kicked the model in the nuts.

Gouache! The moral or the story is... Don't try and do this kind of thing without a sketch or drawing underneath...

Last two weeks have been madness! Got a promotion at work, shortly followed by a death in the family... you can kinda guess I've been busy.

Here are a few slim pickings from the last couple of weeks:

Original:

Studies of old masters:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/well_drawn_girl/Scanned-Image-3-1-dragged.jpg
Want to do some more of the Bargue pics actually! I know it's not 100% right but I'm pretty pleased with it. It was fun and I think I could learn a lot from it. It may well be one of the things I've been missing...
