Hey All,

I've been reading the fur threads lately because I have the same problem. I'm trying to make some grass for the scene below which was done in Max 5. I know the old scatter method but in order to make the grass small enough, I have to not only max out the scatter output, but then duplicate the scatter object a few times. It slows my computer to a crawl, even with only displaying 1% of the grass. And don't even think of rendering it. Besides, I'll be using scatter for leaves.

Last week Alex Broeckel's new reel was featured on the main page so I downloaded it and it was awsome. The first scene shows a velvet texture used as grass and it would work perfect for my scene. How is that done? Ian mentioned playing with falloff between two diffuse maps. Is that possible in Max without a plugin? Or if a plugin is needed, which one does the trick? I'd appreciate any help on getting this effect. Thanks!

Here's an image of Alex Broeckel's velvet ground. Download the real if you haven't. It's great!

Falloff maps are defult in 3dsmax5 they have been there for ages, probably way back in the days of max2 or less.

Here is an example file I quickly made for you to look at:

http://www.users.tpg.com.au/adsl7k7r/falloff_grass.max

It's very simple, but should give you a quick idea of how to use falloff. The material is included. Take a look through it and render from different test angles. If you have any questions I'll be checking back here again.

Ian,

Thanks for humoring such a noob question. That's exactly what I wanted. How did you learn about textures? Was it a class or is there a certain book you can recommend. Textures are by far my weakest point in 3D. Thanks again.

Totally self-taught. Internet mainly, CGtalk for example. I'm still a n00b aswell. I read a lot of stuff on these forums. If I see something and I don't know how to do it then I'll investigate it or at least keep it on my mind until something sparks my interest in it again. I read lots of threads, you can really learn heaps from other peoples questions. If you have that attitude and initiative then I think you can go far.

I only know a little about materials really, just enough to know the right places to investigate when I need to do something. I have never made a UVW map yet... but thats my next step to learn.
