View Full Version : Exporting a model from 3D Max to Maya?!
JonnyNewo 10-16-2003, 01:39 AM Is it possible to export a character, mesh only, into Maya?
I've heard of people using 3D Max to render and another program to model before.... So how is that possible? I have a character who is not rigged that I would like to open up in Maya. I have Maya 4.5 and 3D Max 5.1 available at the moment. Maybe this a dumb question, but if it's not then could somebody please help me out here?

I'm guessing maya imports several formats like 3ds, obj, dxf.... collapse your stack and export in one of those formats.

Try to get the FBX (Filmbox) exporter. It does really a good job exporting/importing polymodels between many packages. It also preserves smoothing groups and u/v coords.
Good to know, it has just come up for me too..
Hey before I give up my address to Kaydara do you know if the Max FBX I/O plugins are free?

Not sure if its free, I use it at work and never checked.
I think I've read somewhere that the exporter is free for Max though.

With all that I guess I will go ahead and give em the contact info to register.

Thanks for the tips guy! I found the program mentioned but for some reason Maya won't open up .fbx files. And 3D Max won't save my character as a .obj either. Any ideas what's wrong? Anybody? Or am I just a moron?

Go download BonusTools from Alias's website. Among the features in there is a 3ds Max importer plugin. That might help.

I checked the Alias's website and found the bonus tools you mentioned.... but it looks like you have to have a Customer Location Code, which you would only have if you bought Maya. I'm a student, so I'm not the owner of this program and I don't know the Customer Location Code....bummer....
