wow, it's out! Not sure this is the best place for posting this, as i suspect this is REALLY HUGE NEWS for 3d folks.

http://udn.epicgames.com/pub/Powered/UnrealEngine2Runtime/

Want to harness the power of the second-generation Unreal engine for your non-game application? The UnrealEngine2Runtime lets you work with the core Unreal technology without the video game trappings. Plus, it's free for non-commercial use!

In a nutshell...

This is a FREE version of the engine for non-game, non-profit use.

Anybody interested in some form of collaborative work for fun?

- a 3dirc community download, perhaps with some simple worlds and some really fun characters for folks to choose from?

- a 3d art gallery download, where folks can show off their 2d and 3d art... perhaps set some standards for coordinating a wider network of galleries?

LOTS of possibilities...

Maybe find some sponsors for a cgtalk Art/Community server for 32 visitors? :D

for example... if i were a modeler or level designer looking for work... i could make my own 'demo' of my stuff on an independent build.

there are all kinds of uses for this technology beyond gaming.

Educational, artistic and perhaps even purely social.

I myself already plan to make a little art gallery type of setting, perhaps based on dali's narcissus "landscape."

Could add vehicles... and have people sit and chat in surreal environments.

Could make a real Sims-type moo/mud/irc chat community.

Could make virtual classrooms where folks gather to talk in various languages.

etc

Hey i think it's kinda cool. I for one would love to see some funky things come out of this. And just because you can't make money off the use of the engine you could still have a lot of fun playing around with it.

I for one havn't done any low poly modeling so maybe i should give this a go and see what i can come up with. I like the freaky gallery idea, Dali's stuff is pretty damn cool.

I'm in if we are making something with this :)

yea!

i figure that higher poly characters are viable within a non-game situation, if the world isnt nutso. without tracking projectiles, lots of movement, etc, i presume a lot of the load is removed.

typical ut2k* player is around 3k polys. 200-400k get rendered at a time in any given ut2k* map, seems to me.

just for artistic sake, id love to see folks find this as a way to make really nice characters in the 6k range.

unless you were trying to push the netcode and get more than 32 people onto a server, with extremely high detailed artistic environments... then you might want to back down a tad.
