View Full Version : Object: Alternatively shaped guitar
Arnage 10-15-2003, 08:41 PM This guitar was made for a magazine cover of a dutch phisucs magazine. There's an article inside about physics and music and i was asked to combine the greek letter psi (symbol of waves) with a guitar. It's mostly based on a stratocaster, but i've taken some small liberties. The background was intentionaly left blank te leave some room for the text that had to be added onto it.
It's already on it's way to be printed, but i'd really appreciate some comments.
tech specs: made with max 5.1 and rendered with FinalRender stage-1 at 2100x3000 (this one is a resized version)

nicely done.
if i remember correctly, the guitar would have pretty decent intonation, with the symetrical headstock.
can't say it looks like the most comfortable axe to play though. i think i'll stick with my Strat. :p
was it for the sake of symetry that you placed the 1/4" jack where you did? i wonder what it would look like rotated to the right, on the "bottom edge" (when it's held to be played by a right handed guitarist).
what did you use to make the textures on the fretboard and the headstock?

Thanks for the replies!
I first placed the jack rotated and a bit to the right but with the symetrical form it just didn't look right and it's still far away enough not to be in the way while playing.
The textures are actually quite simple, for both the textures i used two textures which i mixed with a hard moise map (normal noise will result in blurriness, so it's better to leave some parts with only one of the two textures) and then i tweaked the two texture's rgb output amount to give them both the same overall color to make it look like one kind of wood.
btw. i meant physics instead of phisucs in my first post :p

excellent! ... good choice going with the 'stratocaster' elements. makes it feel more recognizable

It looks like you have created a bit of an illusion - the top of the guitar appears to rest against a wall, while the bottom appears to rest on top of a floor. Yet, there is no clear separation of the wall and floor in the background. (Is it resting in a spherical shape?) A neat effect - but I would be interested in comparing this image with one that does have the separation of wall/floor somewhat diagonally behind the guitar. It may just look more cluttered, though, who knows.
Great job, anyway. Very nice model!

to me it looks a bit like it's leaning against the wall in a photographer's studio. they always have those rounded joints between the floor and the wall so they avoid those hard and distracting shadows. at least that's what i've always been told.
the shadow at the base seems to project to the floor and then somwhere along the way it starts to curve up toward vertical.
and i agree with Plays_4_Pants...give us the whole alphabet :p

Again thanks for the feadback.
The guitar is indeed resting on a sloped wall to get a studio-like effect, they often use walls like this for product photography to not distract attention from the product.
About the Alphabet, we'll you should first explain to me how you can use a letter like pi as a guitar body ;)

very righteous looking. as simple as the metal texture looks on plug outlet, i dig it. the specular highlight on it is wicked. great job, mate.

Hey!
Nice to see a fellow citizen of Rotterdam posting here! :buttrock:
Are you a freelancer here?
I like the design of the guitar, especially bearing in mind the assignment. Maybe the material could use a little more glossiness and specularity, but that's about all I got to criticize!

hehe, this is nice! :)
but I think, my Steinberger is more practical :)

wow, that's a lot of kind replies and critiques!
About the speculars: they are quite big because i used a really big rectangle area light to get the nice lightning and blurred shadows. I also lowered the specularity on the body a bit because the red would get washed out to much with higher spec and i wanted to get the strat-like bright saturated red.
Thekkur - I'm more a student that does 3d as a hobby then a freelancer, but i try to make a little extra buck by doing a job now and then, but this one was a favor so i didn't get paid for it. Why did you ask? Btw. are you a max user? If so will you be going to the max 6 presentation in rotterdam around the 28th? (not sure when it's exactly) I'll be probably be there.

Here's a close-up picture of the original render so you better see the some of the details and the nice (but cpy killing) blurry reflections:
