hello all...

Does anyone know how to emit particles and have them clump together? Something similar to the multipoint render type but I want to instance geos on to them.

Have you tried nParticles and using Force Field Generation -> Self Attract?. Probably adding Self Collide might also help.

surface tension in the liquid simulation tab can help to clump particles too

Oh yes, good point. Also, making them sticky when self collidin might result in nice clumps.

Or try emitting particles from your first ones using per point emission rates. Then maybe use the emitter particles as goals. Eg

sorry guys..none of them gave the results I wanted. With force field gen and fluid tension the particles would collapse on them selves. Im looking for a kinda attract field with a radius and a distance limit the particles can come close to each other but not cross or touch. the closest I got is with a emmision from a animated texture...but its still a bit wonky.. :)
I can get the effect I am looking for with 3dsmax using the keepApart field in pflow. is there something like that in maya? any more ideas?

did you set the self collide radius to greater than 1? you can also visualize the size of the collisions in the collisions tab.

Goals with a negative Force Field and max distance to push particles away might work.

Have you tried nparticles with nconstraints? ;) slow as hell with alot of particles, but works somewhat depending on what you need it for...

@HowardM (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=3514) I tried using the constraints and it is extremely slow!! haha.

I though of just grouping rock geos in different configs with random rotations. Its a lot faster and its very close to the effect i want...but I would still like to investigate a way to clump with just particles. Does anyone know the math/script behind the KeepApart Node in Max?
