it looks like a picture to me, so good job!!
did you use a plug-in or script to make the image look old, or just used photopaint or something like that?

Thank you for your reply.
I have used photoshop for the second picture to make the image look old. It was rendered like the first one, but i thaught it was interesting to make it old.

Awesome render man... What were the render times and render resolutions?? And could you share any unique problems and solutions you experienced while working on this project, specific to Maya and Mental Ray?
Kudos

Great !
rastapopoulos
06-03-2002, 07:24 AM
The resolution was 1024*768 and around 2h for rendering.
It was difficult to work with mental ray because of the rendering time for preview and a lot of problems due to the parameters. You can have two pics completly different with almost the same parameter.

It was certainly not easy!
I love when nothing is hidden in the dark. Great job. The colored version is amazing!

Great stuff:thumbsup:
The DOF in the second pic is a bit strange though..
I reckon you achieve that look in post production??(the old&grainy look that is)
keep it up

ooooh
i also like the first one better, for some reason it looks more old and nostalgic than the second to me. is it possible to show us the second pic without the postprocessing?
if10w

06-03-2002, 12:07 PM
The second image, is not interresting in colour, because while i was doing it, i already know that it will be like that. You don't work a black and white picture like a colour one.
if10w
06-03-2002, 05:14 PM
? im not sure i follow.............didn't u said u did the 2nd one like the first one, and then photoshop it? or u have different materials in maya for the black and white render altogether?

That's right, i have used photoshop, but when you make a render, in fcheck you can see your render directly in black and white. I have work like that, the picture was rendered in colours, but i have based my parameters on my black and white render test. So, in colour, the picture is not a good picture, i have thaugt it to be a 2 coulour pics. The picture has no reason to be seen in colour because it was made to be like that. Sorry for my bad english, i hope you understand me.

Excellent job, piece of art. Took me a while to see any cg bits!!! I would say that your floor looks a little flat, but that's only that!!

for is me!
Q: do you know the first name of captain hadduk?!

06-04-2002, 12:22 AM
Of course i'am a tintin fan. I don't think it's possible to have a name like rastapopoulos without being a tintin fan, or you must be complety crazy.

Quite a novel you wrote xyn :p ;)
And yes, very nice looking pictures... but in a god damn 2h!?
Could you tell us the settings you used for the MR specific features, like GI/FG/DOF, as I'd like to render smooth GI/FG pictures in less than 40h too :scream:
Or did you have some 10000000000 CPU renderfarm just beside you? :)
Oh and could you post a wireframe view of the images? (I'm just curious)

He posted these details earlier about the rendering size and time...
"The resolution was 1024*768 and around 2h for rendering.

Wow! amazing pic! my only crit is that
the texture on the drum (on the upper
part) looks a bit repetitive, in my opinion.
Other than that, it's perfect!

In fact this is a school work, and it's the end of the school year so I haven't had a lot of time to make this picture. I know there is some problems, but i'have do my best in the best time.

rastapopoulos cheers on the the lighting I think that what makes the pic sand out so much. two thing I would like to know, is it more or less straight out of maya or have you added post to it, not to put it down no matter its an awesome job but ive used mental ray and im not to happy with it so I dropped it so when I see nice stuff coming out of it make me fire it up again . Also can you provide a screen grab so I can see yourwire frame and the position of your lights sources.
Thanks nice deal

There is 2 light in the scene, but only one with gi. I have build a box with the gi light out of the box. There is a hole in the box to make as if there was a door open. And the seconde light is in the box and make some part of the scene less dark. The first light is a mental ray area light.

Just thought though, that's in English though could be different in French.
Speaking of tintin, does anyone have a copy of the book that was banned in England, I think it was "Tintin in the Congo" (Tintin au Congo?) and it was banned because Herge didn't exactly paint africans in the most equal light, shall we say
