Their main difference is the PAT function. I know some 865 board can enable the PAT, so do I still need to buy 875 to have more performance? Performance is the main concern for me.

from what i've seen from reviews and benchmarks scattered around the web, the 875 has about 5% better performance over the 865. it's usually more than 5% more expensive, so the dollar value isn't as good.

i've set up 875 and 865 boards for clients and at a quick glance i haven't seen or felt any huge differences. i didn't really get a chance to play with them in depth of course.

Are the 865 U saw on the Web are PAT enabled? Can U point me to those benchmarks?

The 875 is forward compatible, the 865 is not.

You will at most be able to upgrade an 875 system to 4.2 GHz.

Right now, Prescott support isn't really certain for any of the 875/865 boards available on the market, as Intel has changed somewhat the targets for its new processor. There are some that claim full support, but it remains to be seen when Prescott actually ships. So future upgradability shouldn't really be a concern here imho, as by the time they get actually get to 4.2 Ghz, you will also want a BTX motherboard with PCI Express slots and DDR2, anyway.

The 865 boards perform with PAT activated about on the same level as 875 boards, in some cases actually surpassing them. However, the 875 boards have come down somewhat in price, so the difference might not be all that much, once you start looking at the extra features you get in the deal (take a look at Epox's 875 board, for instance).

The 875s have a definite advantage once you start overclocking, but I guess that's not something you want to do with your system. The problem with 865s is that once you start pushing them, the PAT gets disabled or only partially enabled, whereas with 875s you get full PAT at OC speeds (provided you don't use all 4 memory banks in some boards, btw!).

Cheers,
Andrei
