I would like to do a material change in particles like in the video below from 0:11 to 0:15 using Maya.

I would also like to make diamond particles like he has at the end of the video.

Any ideas on how he did either of those?

for the diamond particles, look into using the particle instancer - expect epic render times too :wip:

create object, make it "goal" to nParticles, after simulation modify -> convert -> nParticle to Polygons.
existing shape make transparent and in the right frame make this object visible through an animated mask.

"I would also like to make diamond particles like he has at the end of the video." read this (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=86&t=437677&highlight=voronoi)

hope this help

It looks like his diamond particles are actually rigid bodies. See how they collide with each other. They have much more accurate collisions then nParticles can provide.
