I hope this is the right thread for this type of work.
My work is seriously slowing down on this model. I'm not sure where else to tweak before I go to texturing (i've been told to make sure my model is finished before texturing, right?) I spend so much time looking at this its hard to be objective anymore. Its a self portrait...i'll post real pics of me if that interests anyone.
Other than the general shape, how is my mesh looking? Messy? I want to animate this later on, and would hate to figure out later that i need more geometry somewhere for certain expressions.
I'm also not sure what to do about the creese down the center. I see a lot of meshes where the center is a polygon, not a seam like mine. Should I remodel along the center (cut a stripe down and delete an edge after welding)?
Thanks for taking a look. My first big undertaking.

thought this would help, in any case. sorry i got so many big ass images to load here.

please excuse the extreme perspective i got going on...no, my nose is not that big, and no, my ears are not that small! hehe

....but yes, my eyes ARE that sunken into my head

Looking really good. About the model: I think you OVER-DID the ears... take a look at yours and compare.. the modeled ones has more creases and dimples... they are starting to look non-human.

I believe that you have a small dimple on your shin, but there isn't any on the model.

About the crease: I don't use Maya, but I believe the next is application independent:

If you really want to get rid of the crease, just merge both halves (so that they are actually just one mesh) and then weld the vertex located at the same place.

However, you can use that crease as a shortcut on your texturing work by just mapping one half, then duplicating the mapped half, mirroring the mapping and THEN welding both halves of the face.

Here is a Blender tutorial that shows the process. I'm sure that the same can be done in Maya

Just pay attention to the black-and-white pictures.

Thanks for the direction Apollux.
Yea, the ears are getting crazy. There is a bunch of geometry that is so tangled up towards the inside of the ear that i've tried to clean up. To be honest i haven't done much wiht the ears in a while...just so frustrated working with the messed up stuff! I guess there is work I could do on the ok parts though.

I've tried combining the two halves and then merging the vertices. I end up with a seam down the middle though. Maybe the process is right but the execution is missing something?

That seam u get might be caused by some misaligned vertices, make sure they are all exactly aligned (snap em all to the same grid line for instance) then the merging should work fine. Another reason is probably u have "keep hard edges" turned on when smoothing the mesh. The welding of vertices usually result in a hard edge so U might wanna look at that to, hope it helps!

would i look at the full/part/uncrease edge/vertex options under the sub-d menu? Wheres this option at?
Thanks MoD_Legion...its probably that cos i tend to go snapping stuff every once and a while when stuff gets out of whack.

I think the correct course of action is:

- Mirror
- Attach (so both surfaces wil be considered as one)
- Switch to poly mode, select the vertices on the edge
- Under edit polygon use the merge vertices (make sure the distance is not to big/small)
- Uncrease the edge

1,2 and 5 are under subd, 4 is in edit polygon.

What about the geometry in general? I was thinking today that i might add a loop from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth to aid in some of the more extreme expressions. I also wanna keep the geo relatively simple and easy to work with.
You guys see anywhere I might be able to use some more cuts?
