View Full Version : Cut - Increasingly Frustrating (max 5.1)

Hi all,

I'm modeling a human head from a tutorial book, so I'm still a bit green with the software.

When using the cut tool to split polygons, I'm finding that the guide is snapping to vertices when I don't want it to. Sometimes, the cut tool doesn't seem to want to work (simply won't split a given edge/insert a vertex at all). This wasn't happen at all when I started, but gets worse as the mesh becomes more dense.

My snap toggle is off. Thanks for any advice. :)

If cut tool's bothering you, just go and manually insert the vertex into the edge ("Insert vertex"), the connect the edges you need to cut and connect the end point of last edge to the newly created vertex.

Thats what I usually do.

sometimes if you are not "looking" directly at the plane or edge you are cutting it will have a tendency to not do what you want. Try moving the viewpoint more directly over what you are working on. that seems to help me.

just zoom on the area you want to perform cutting in "perspective" mode... and then switch to "user" ortographic view... now try to cut... works perfectly... for me at least it does :)

when it refuses to perform cut e.g. from edge 1 to edge 2... try vice versa... i mean.. try cutting from edge 2 to edge 1... if that does not work... then check if polygons are connected properly...

hope this helps...

one more: it's always useful splitting your mesh for easier modelling...

Try CREAT EDGE function.

Make sure there are no faces facing the other way hidden from your eyes in front of the area you want to cut. Even if you have hidden the faces I think it gets in the way of the cut tool.
Which makes things a pain in the ass when trying to cut around the inside of a characters mouth.

what about the Connect (vertex or edges) in Editable Poly?...I just use that instead of Cut

I always try Connect as my second option, but sometimes have trouble creating and/or connecting the vertices. It seems to be similar to the problem I have with Cut.

I went through the same problem, and i almost done what peekoot did and it worked fine, though just to add make sure that the background check box is not on :) good luck

I prefer to use a plugin called Cleancut. Its much easier to use than MAX`s default cut tool, more like Maya`s.

Here is the direct link from scriptspot:

i was just gonna suggest cleancut. the only drawback of it is u cant use it with the symetry modifier. if u mirror and instance it works fine tho.

I was just using cleancut and it screwed up my mesh (not undoable), and then my max. Some instability issues.

Yeah, there were some serious undo issues that I couldn't get past because of Maxscript's garbage collection mechanism. I've recently started some R&D work on an improved version which should be much more reliable, and it will add support for maintaining mapping coordinates. I have a few other new bells and whistles planned as well:)

Thanks to VirtualShade et. al. for the mention, though:thumbsup:

LFShade: Its great idea and implementation, very intuitive approach to cutting. I'll try to check up later for newer version (if you get one out) since I'm doing tons of polymodeling the past two months.

LFShade, great to hear that you are still developing the plugin:thumbsup: Let us know of any updates.

Sheesh! Where do you find the time between work on Scene Manager and the new material editor plugin? Clearly you must never sleep:eek:
