Lunatique 06-01-2002, 12:36 PM Some of you probably have seen my dumbass noob posts recently. I'm a traditiona artist climbing the 3D learning curve, and my tool of choice is Maya 4 Unlimited. I will be posting my progress in 3D once I have made something not too embarrassing.
In the meantime, here are some of my non-3D work:
I use Photoshop and Painter, and also traditional tools(watercolors, oil, acrylics...etc).

Holy cow, thanks for the generous compliments!
I'm a total noob, and I'm just starting to get the hang of a small corner of Maya's capabilities. I'll be posting a lot more dumbass noob questions along the way, so please be patient with me.
For the first pic, I did use reference, but I never follow references exactly. I always inject something unique and personal that makes the piece special to me. Most of my work is done without reference, but every once a while, I'll see a pose that's so inspiring, I'll use it and do something different with it.
I posted some works in progress here: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9464
Any comments and critiques would be appreciated. :D

I love your sense of lighting, and composition. Normally I see a lot of over exertion as fara sposes go and a lot of concetration on exagerated anatomy but your work reamins sublty appealling. I like the fact that your style - though not necessarily fresh - is especially clean. I hate sloppy work.
Wow :bounce: Wow :bounce: And Wow :bounce:

Hi Lunatique,
Most impressive digital work. You should really try doing more from life or really good reference. The top image is clearly your strongest piece. My only crit would be to watch your edges. Unless all your work is going to have a soft blurry style. Your first image of the woman has her right arm pointing away from her body and closer to the foreground. The back of her arm to her elbow could be sharper. Not to much to take away from the focus though. The bridge of her nose could also be sharper than the edge of her left cheek. As things go back in space they become softer. Vice versa. Again if you're going for a sylized realism what I've typed doesn't apply. But maybe in the future if you decide to do a photorealistic portrait it always helps to remember the rules.

I'm including these two pieces per cg channel staff's request:
http://www.enchanted.prohosting.com/paintings_drawings/new/portrait_tina.jpg
http://www.enchanted.prohosting.com/paintings_drawings/new/window.jpg
These two were just painting exercises to work out some of my brush work experiements. They were both considered failures since I didn't achieve the style I wanted, but I learned a lot from doing them. References were used, but not blindly copied from. I'm against copying photographs like a human zerox machine. If you're going to use reference, do something different with it.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes and wonderful compliments! I'm a bit freaked out by all the great responses since I'm just a 2D artist, and a stupid noob in 3D.
illustr8rX- Yep, I'm a regular sijun kid. :D
Eric UNSL- you are right on about my being selective about details and edges. I'm trying to break away from the convention and do my own thing. In fact, I'll be pushing it even further in the future. My goal is to hit that bravura brushwork/alla prima style with my own twist(I'm an admirer of Sargent, Schmid, Lipking..etc).
Cman- I use both, sometimes just just one, sometimes both. Depends on the piece.
rotaryman- I worked with Cecil at Z-Axis for a year and a half. He's one of the nicest/sweetest dudes I've ever met. He's my sexual Chocolate(inside joke). :D
Dr_Pepper- if you mean starting with a blank white background, and then draw/paint one brush stroke at a time, yes.
stunna- Painter was designed to mimic traditional mediums(oils, watercolor, pastel..etc). Its brush engine is light years ahead of Photoshops, but Photoshop destroys Painter in image editing.
Dr BeN- The Melancholic Princess piece was done from my head. For inspiration, I had compiled a combination face using various beautiful faces, which melted away any individualism in facial features, and amplified the common attractive traits. I then studied that compiled face to see how much I can paint a face without any idiosyncrasies associated with individual faces, and come up with an ethereal, yet realistic face.
Here are some closeups of the Princess:
http://www.enchanted.prohosting.com/paintings_drawings/new/melancholic_princess_details-2.jpg
http://www.enchanted.prohosting.com/paintings_drawings/new/melancholic_princess_details-1.jpg
wildcart- Photoshop still has a ways to go to compete with Painter in the brush engine arena, but they are definitely getting warmer. I uninstalled Photoshop 7 and stayed with 6 as the new features irritated me more than impressed me.
dimitrios_c- I will start posting my 3D work when they stop s.u.c.king. :D

"People that just don't "get it"-- They are the ones that yawn during a brilliant film because "it didn't have any explosions." Or, they are fans of current pop sensations created by the greedy record companies. It would even be ok if these people showed some preference for works of substance every once a while, but sadly, most of them are shallow from head to toe, 24/7. Because of the shallow taste of the mass public, many excellent creative works are obscure, and their creators can barely make a living while undeserving hacks are making millions. "
Yepp, we are speaking the same language, im glad someone has pointed this out.

Very nice light airbrush style, one small minute thing, on the cameron diaz, i believe ? or the first painting, i would say that the crease between her elbow, the bicep and forearm, needs a believable crease or fold. Her breasts are a bit to big, the don't hang believable, and is mostly covered in black, i would put a subtle navy blue on the under or over side of breast, i can't remember, i would have to lookat the pic again. The hair locks by the right ear should be a bit darker lik in the upper like in the upper portion of hair, and the hump that's by the right hand on the lower side of the wrist should be shaved down a little. Not sure if you used photo reference and whether or not that's how it was in the photo, sometimes reality looks fake and you must put in artisitic merit.

Wow, thanks for all the awesome replies! You guys sure know how to make a stranger feel welcome!
Dr BeN- Nope, no poster selling. I don't think there's enough demand to attempt such a thing.
I was very surprised when cgchannel contacted me to tell me that I was featured on the front page. Really freaked me out. Couldn't have happend at a better forum, since this is my favorite 3D forum. :D
The Princess has stolen many hearts, but she's still single. ;)
kfc- wahahahahaha!! At first, I thought it was a spoof of one of Steven Stahlberg's test animations where the woman yells "Bastard!" My GF got a kick out of it too. We refer to the Princess as our daughter, since we always say that we wish when we have a daughter in the future, she'll be as pretty as the Princess. :)

OggieBoogie- Heheheh. I didn't know people actually bothered to read my rants. Glad you agree.
J. Epp (Moksha)- Thanks for the crits. I'll look into it when I have some free time. I'm so swamped with unfinished paintings that older, finished work might have to wait for fixes. BTW, she's not anyone famous. Just a pic of a fashion chick I was inspired by. I never copy references blindly. In fact, I make it a point to do something original whenever I use references.
Another thing-- I never use the airbrush tools, in Painter or Photoshop. Always just the brushes. The first piece was actually painted with just the palette knife tool in Painter.
Dis- MEDIC!! (I'm a Team Fortress fan)
anhedonite- Don't be late! Pissy boss makes a bad day at work. ;)
Right now, I'm just trying to familiarize myself more with Maya's tools. I'm about to start on my first serious human model(a cute chick, of course ;)) after I finish off one more tutorial. I'll be posting her in the WIP section for people to laugh at soon. . ..
Dennik- There's NO guarantee that my 3D work will be any good. For all I know, they could end up on Gallerie Abominate!(http://www.jackals-forge.com/abom.html)
Norante- Please don't be. I feel the same way when I see works by guys at Square, Tecmo, Namco..etc, but that just makes me want to try harder. Let's inspire each other and help each other grow! :D
