Ive always wondered how some people have used the volumetric lighting affect that goes behind the text but makes the text look as if it had a lightsource behind it, and the light shining through but gradually fades out...

Its used a lot with movie intro's and commercials..
I know how to do this effect with 3dsmax if you actually make a cutout or boolean with text and a box and shine through the part thats been cutout..

but these animations always have text in the foreground and somehow the light is still being emmited from it,.

can anyone point me to a tutorial or just quickly explain what is done differently here??

ae shine is the difference :D

or some apps support "inverse volumetrics" (cinema 4d is one... well prolly the only one i've heard of actually), this only shows volumetric light where the shadow would be normally... good for this sort of ultra cheesy and overused effect.

It can be a cheesy effect is misused, as they all can, but as effects go, I would say this is one of the best and most effective. Thus its frequent use.
