i've always been curious, do you think it's possible to create a working/render-able camera lens out of refractive geometry? i'm thinking the kind that can focus the scene cameras view and possibly even zoom. i don't see how this would ever be useful as it wouldn't be able to anything a physical camera can't, but it would certainly be an interesting exercise.

It's definitely possible but it wouldn't really be practical. You could even set up a rig with viewfinder, reflectors and lens to be completely accurate. But the render time would increase for each trace depth increase. I could see some pretty neat things done like a non-uniform lens or different shapes to get some interesting images.

Yeah of course you could, I modelled a rifle with a working scope on it that actually created a 'zoom-in' effect
