Head Tutorial (http://www2.ocn.ne.jp/~mimura/tutorials/index_e.html)
I'm stuck between 8 & 9(at the very bottom), as the author of this tutorial is not very good on explanation. When it comes to the part of making smaller polygons for the crown, and the other features he's selecting, I'm assuming he wants me to subdivide. But when I subdivides it in the way it looks in the picture except it creates little triangles around the subdivided section. Kinda like when you knife a bunch of polygons it creates triangles. See what I'm saying? Thanx for the help.:wavey:

He is saying subdivide by using the knife tool. Select the polys a row at a time and then get the knife tool and cut them down the middle. IF you hold down shift you can snap the cut at 45 degree angles so you can make sure the cut is horizontal or vertical. hth.

Make sure you start your cut outside your 3d model and drag the line while holding shift tell you go through and out of the model, this way it cuts all polys and doesn't leave unwanted tri's. I am not to sure if this was the problem you were having but I hope it helps :]

Thanks dudes, this was exactly the problem. Sorry I took so long to respond, I went to sleep at 11 last night, and have just now woken up.

Sorry to bring an old thread to life; but, I'm just doing this same tutorial and have a knife problem. I found the help file didn't explain how to use the knife very well. I'm using Cinema4D 6 CE+. When I dragged the knife tool through the row of polygons, it created the line through the polygons straight. My row of polygons are not straight, they curve down a bit and then up a bit. How do you keep the new line in the middle of all the polygons? Do you have to later manually move the points down? This is the first time I used the knife tool. Thanks.

ok dunno about 6 but each tool you use or select to use has attributes which you can control from the active tool tab...in this case is kinda irrelevant but always worth thinking about in future.

i always used cutter and saw as they centralized my cut.

make thicker is an essential imho...OT of course

The knife tool only works in a straight line. You should get a copy of the free plugin "Cutter" by Arndt Von Koenigsmarck. It splits a row of selected polys, which is exactly what you want.

Ah! Thanks guys for the info and link. I'll download this now.

Edit: The cut plugin works great. Thanks guys. Why didn't Maxon provide this within Cinema? Now you don't have to worry about those triangles that could get created when using the knife tool.

R8 includes more or less the same functionality with its edge cut feature. Mesh Surgery takes this concept to a whole new level.

I hope to be able to afford R8 next year (or whatever the newest version will be). I'm just glad I was able to upgrade to the CE+ to get used to Cinema.

I'm having a bit of a problem with this tutorial in the nose area. I need to add polygons with the knife but I'm using the cutter plugin instead. I keep getting triangles that don't go away when I use Untriangulate and my result does not look like the tutorials result. Is there a way to delete polygons or vertices without leaving a hole? It would be handy to dissolve a line or point without deleting the polygon. I got used to the dissolve feature in Houdini Apprentice; but, I want to use cinema since I upgraded my CE to CE+. Any hints as to how I can make a cleaner cut?

tricky on to answer any chance you can screenshot it for us.

(often people spin poly to move tris (plugin), edge melt stuff (v8), don't forget you can't have polys with more than three/four points to them...so this might explain why you could do it houdini...thats if it has ngons...dunno though. whats wrong with making a hole and then using make poly to put back it?
a lot of the time when cutting you can end up with tris...especially if they are not cut to an edge for example and say landlocked if this makes sense...)

post a piccy...i'm sure one of the pro's can help you out.

I did delete some poly's and tried to fill it with the bridge but couldn't get that working. I'll try the make poly if it is in version 6. Is there a plugin called "spin poly to move tris"? I really miss the "polysplit" that is in a lot of other packages. I seem to have more control for placing the split when I use polysplit. Does the latest version have polysplit?

I'll post a pic later; I'm not in cinema at the moment.

flingster: Thanks for the link to the plugin. I didn't download it earlier because I was just trying out free ones. But I decided to try this one out since it was cheap and am glad I did. It solves a lot of triangle problems.

When I use either the knife or the cutter plugin I need to weld 2 points together when I create the cut from the corner of a triangle to the edge of a square polygon. I'll have to see if I can find a way to snap at the triangle corner when starting the cut.
I'll attach a screenshot of what I mean.
